It looks inaccurate and there are albums missing.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

It's highly inaccurate. There's no way those numbers reflect anything beyond US sales probably. Those are also numbers when it was initially released. The numbers might have went up a bit in the past 20 years. Just nonsense.

Well..its not really the low numbers that got my attention, its the high ones.
Like Rave and The Gold Experience. I didnt think either of those went platinum.
And also, Planet Earth and Lotus..Platinum???

You have to remember that despite him hardly singing a lot of songs frequently at the 02 shows in London, the album was connected to the 21 shows. It created a synergy over there, and here. I can see that one selling about what it did. Tours sell records.

IIRC, Lotus sold about 350,000 x 3 disks it almost a million. It's the number of disks you sell, not the number of albums. It's why Emancipation shows 3 million, yet it probably sold a million. But it had 3 disks, so..there ya go: 3 million.

Regardless, those numbers are quite inaccurate.

I think you have to charge a certain amount for multi cd albums before its counted like emancipation was. Emancipation was at least $30 where as Lotus was $11. Maybe Im wrong, i dont know.

Emancipation was never $30 that I saw. I never saw it for over $24 at the major outlets like Camelot, Sam Goody, Record Town, etc. In fact, Prince stated at the time that he was putting a lower price on it so everyone could afford it. Some places had it just under $20, but that was rare. Of course now you can find it in a cut-out bin for $4.99 new.

You don't adjust a platinum or gold status based on price. The status isn't based on how much money you made, it's how many DISKS you sold. Prince bragged at the time that Emancipation had shipped 1,000,000 units. The truth was that he shipped over 300,000 albums, and times 3.....that's a million. It's just how the industry counts disks, not albums.

NONSENSE

anyone who actually read the link should see the disclaimer at the end:

Answers.com reports these sales only reflect US, UK and Canada...this is just a fraction of his success

I believe these are world wide numbers (or USA, Canada and UK combined). And if so... would be likely be accurate.

Most are used to just seeing the US charts.. or each chart separately.

I think the Planet Eart figure could be all the ones given away free in that British newspaper, I remember here at least, promotion for any post 2000 title has been non existent

Being that Musicology was given away to everyone who paid the price of a ticket to the concert, does that go the sales of the cd? wow! prince has never even come close to topping Purple Rain. and there are sum albums missing.

They must be doing the multi disc count thing coz Sign of the times never sold 8 million copies. These figures are weird. It is the first time I have seen a global figure for Purple rain that is realistic but then Batman has a 2million figure. The figures seem to chop and change between US sales and Global

Are these sales calculated from when it first came out? or are they the sales figures to this day?

i guess many of you dont realise this is a worldwide chart ..so just because it says whatever lp sold 1million copies don't make it platinum.platinum status is different for every country.the usa is the only country in the world that sets a 500,000 mark for gold and 1,000,000 mark for platinum(and so on and so forth)no one gets a platinum disc forselling 1,000,000 copies worldwide.in any event this is an inaccurate chart all together

Exactly, in New Zealand, an album only has to sell 5,000 copies for gold and 10,000 for Platinum. Purple Rain sold 38,500 copies here going 3x Platinum, in the USA 38,000 is enough for a sole week in the Top 20 in comparison. In all I guess Prince has sold 500,000 or so albums in New Zealand and about 3-5 million in Australia (That is a guess)

That's true. That paper tripled it's Sunday circulation thanks to the CD being inside and sold close to 1.5 million copies.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

These are worldwide figures, so should be fairly accurate, If sales even matter that is.

I'm impressed with 'Lotusflow3r' given its limited availability.

Thanks for this.
