Symbol Album Question

I picked up a used copy of Prince's "symbol" album yesterday for $3 at a used CD shop that's owned by a Japanese supermarket chain. It seems like a lot of their used inventory comes from Japan because the discs are always immaculate.

I've had good luck there in the past with Prince discs, all in mint condition and for rock-bottom prices.

Anyhow, the symbol album I picked up has the symbol fused into the plastic and not on the CD booklet. Was this a first pressing or unique copy? If I remember correctly, I've seen a lot of copies of the album with the symbol printed on the front of the booklet.

The 1st copies of the CD had the symbol screened onto the jewel case. Later editions had it on the booklet.

Ahh, ok. So it is a first pressing. Cool! I've seen it used many times but I snagged this one just because I probably wouldn't find a first edition again, in mint shape no less.

It might also be interesting to know that different continents used different art and methods for the silk-screening of the prince on original pressings of the jewel-cases. The US version features a chunkier symbol than the UK edition and is almost a matte sheen. The UK symbol is thinner and more elegant looking. It's also a very glossy gold mirror finish. Looks like the Japanese issue has a similar look to the US version, but maybe somewhat shinier.

This one appears to have a very shiny matte sheen, and what's more there wasn't a scratch on it. A really great find. The booklet doesn't have the text "Prince and the New Power Generation," so it could be the US release.

Good eye. I hadn't even noticed that the US version doesn't say "Prince and the New Power Generation". I've found that Japanese pressings, besides having the Obi strip, usually have some Japanese print inside the booklet on a separate piece of paper. I'm not sure if that's true with the Symbol Album. There are US pressings with no Parental Advisory logo. These were retail copies that have edited songs including Sexy MF re-made to say "You sexy mutha-ooooaaahhh". Pretty funny version, to say the least.

And, yeah... I put my copies of prince in a CD bag right away to keep the silk-screening from getting f'd up.

Don't forget the wallpapered gold box version.

Also every version has a slightly different pattern on the disc from the 3 I've seen ( is this what you meant by silk screen).

The gold box version has the purple pattern right upto the cd hole, first edition goes to the edge of the shiny disc, newer releases co onto the plastic circle but not as far as the boxed version.....GGGGEEEEEKKKKK!!!!!

By silk-screen, I was referring to the prince on the jewel-case itself. But, like you say - there were a bunch of variations on the actual discs, too. The Gold Box actually came two ways. One with the purple and gold design, and one with the picture disc shown at the bottom.

You'll usually find these in the booklets of Japanese copies...

From what I understand, you have access to x-ray machines and CAT Scan equipment. Just use those to see which disc you have. giggle

Actually, the picture disc is for the promo-only Symbol Album box. I just zoomed in on the text. I don't think promos get shrinkwrapped, do they?
