yes but (as you may know) that was a video in 1994 when the Black Album was released, I saw the video without any content than the lyrics running on a black screen - on MTV in the fall '94. There's was no single afaik... only a video. [Edited 10/23/09 12:31pm] Prince 4Ever.

There's was no single afaik... Well, theoretically it was a video single, because the song was out there to "promote" the album in some fashion. Whether WB or Prince did that, it was done, and someone saw the foresight to put that song out, opposed to any other on the CD. Tricky call, but I say it was a "single" in that it was used to promote the album.

Sadly the album didn't sell well in america, to the frustrations of fans, WB and I guess to Prince himself: Imo: it would have been amazing if these 5 songs had been released as singles: Alphabet St. Glam Slam Anna Stesia I Wish U Heaven When 2 R In Love lovesexy is my favourite album i'm surprised it didn't do so well in america, the only thing i don't like is that it is all one track so i can't skip to my favourite (i wish u heaven) so i always listen to it all the way through. But I guess the poor sales of the album made it to be 3 singles only...?

It's difficult to understand why this album didn't do well. I think it's one of the great ones. I also read that the tour ran at a eventual loss because of expensive props, etc. I do think this song fits far better into the Lovesexy theme than the Black album. The biography section on the Prince vault page says the following:
Released on May 10, 1988, Lovesexy serves as a spiritual opposite to the dark The Black Album. Every song is a solo effort by Prince, with exception of No which was recorded with his backing band at the time, dubbed the "Lovesexy Band" by fans. Lovesexy would reach #11 on the Billboard 200 and #5 on the R&B albums chart. The lead single, Alphabet St., peaked at #8 on the Hot 100 and #3 on the R&B chart, but finished with only selling 750,000 copies. Prince again took his post-Revolution backing band (minus 'the Bodyguards') on a three leg, 84 show Lovesexy Tour, that although, it played to huge crowds and were well received shows, financially lost money due to the expensive sets and props incorporated. Funny though that When 2 r in love is not even mentioned as a hit single. Maybe your info is right though about when it hit Japan, but nothing about that is said there. "have U ever been so lonel that U wanted to play with someone so much u'd take anyone boy or girl." phrases like that help deter a song(especially songs with spiritual/religious motif's) from gaining popularity. Not to say I don't think the song is great.

I think the singles should have been:
Alphabet St. (b-side This Is Not Music...) Lovesexy (b-side Rebirth of The Flesh) When 2 R In Love (b-side Scarlet Pussy) Dance On (bside I Wish U Heaven extended) I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Sadly that's what got me interested in Prince at the time. If memory serves me, they spent most of the time agreeing that the black screen was probably an extreme close up of Prince's butt. On a plus side though, it was thanks to seeing it on Beavis & Butthead that I learned the first line wasn't 'It's official 2night', which I had been singing for years! haha Best, Erik blah blah blah

The song is so pure. If "Scandalous" made top 5 on RnB Charts, this song would've made top 5 also. [Edited 9/30/09 14:24pm] Ooooo I love this song!!!!! Shut up already, damn.
