Prince's best jazz fusion work

Ok i know Prince is not a jazz artist but he made some nice fusion jazz rock oriented stuff
So what is Prince's "Spectrum" wink ?

i vote for two songs Xenophobia and Expedition.
7 by madhouse is amazing too.

Xenophobia is very Return to Forever and Stevie's
Contusion.
Xpedition is energetic jazz rock piece with crazy Vanessa Mae violin lines and
one of the best guitar solos by Prince

Sorry, I don't consider TRC as a jazz fusion CD. However, Madhouse, N.E.W.S and Xpectation CDs were among the best!!!

I know what JAZZ FUSION is and I don't consider it any type of fusion. If that's the case, damn-near any r&b/funk song could be considered JAZZ FUSION!

Not really, but there was a good number of rap songs/artist in the early 90's there had jazz fusion: Digible Planets, Tribe Called Quest just 2 name a few

1+1+1 is 3 has a similar feel to jazz artist like Lee Ritenour, Foreplay, even some John Coltrain

violetblues

The Madhouse albums, because the purple sound and jazzy elements blended nicely to create something fresh and original.

TRC is the worst because it sounded like a bad prince impersonator mashed up with old fashioned 70's fusion jazz records or 8 track someone took from a local library.

So, you're saying, any song with jazz riffs or borrows from jazz is considered a "jazz fusion"? I don't necessarily agree with that. To me, 1+1+1 is 3 is a laid back kind of funk, but the chord progressions don't lend itself to the jazz genre.

Would you agree these are "Jazz Fusion" songs (below_? I think these songs are the perfect example of jazz fusion.

Jones Girls - Nights Over Egypt
http://www.youtube.com/wa...lA55xiEEts

Minnie Ripperton - Inside My Love
http://www.youtube.com/wa...RBHSkXWPCs

I classify these as "Jazz Fusion" because the chord progressions and arrangement lend itself to the jazz genre

So you don't consider the chord progressions "jazz"? If you played the song without vocals and someone was playing an instrumental solo, it would definitely be a jazz song. Not to mention the song has been on several "Jazz/soul" compilations.

Strange Relationship comes to my mind. Great song,
Seems like it doesn't completely fit in any category but I think Jazz Fusion comes close.

I don't know about Nights Over Egypt

But Inside My Love does seem to have a tad bit of it, but I wouldn't consider it Jazz fusion, I don't know.

Diamonds by Herb Albert featuring Janet Jackson is another example of Jazz Fusion: the Minneapolis Sound with a Jazz trumpeter Jazz/Pop

?

Are you referring to some of the later live versions? Because "Strange Relationship" originally was pretty straightforward 80s synthpop stuff by Prince's standards. Not that the later live versions were that jazzy either...
well, I don't have any boots from the last couple of years, so perhaps he has played something like that lately.

Mind you, if we were allowed to bring up works outside his instrumental albums, then I'd have to say that stuff like "She Spoke 2 Me", "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" and "When The Lights Go Down" are far superior to the instrumental albums.
