"Tsk, Tsk. Sadly, there is a new generation of "hip music journalists" that don't know their history or give props to those that deserve it. All I can say is that Prince represents not the empty, silly, corporatized brand of "Old School", but rather, REAL FUNK. The kind of Funk that requires a spirit, talent, heat, and real instrument playing, the kind of Funk the music industry forgot and that sadly enough via fake Funk, i.e. Rap/Hip-Hop, kids will not be inspired not carry on, or learn. Reviewers do have a responsibility to it's readers, not just to it's advertisers and their creepy "Hip-Hop Generation" lifestyle pushing world, but to kids looking to satisfy that deep need to reach for a higher self, which Funk music allows (listen to Lovesexy by Prince). So I hope, I really hope, you guys get a better reviewer and/or review of ONA Live. A journalist who's not just stuck on Top 40 tunes as reference and who knows how important Prince is to the history of Rock N' Roll, his people and all the Real Funk seeking, Jazz licking, real musicianship yearning audience that your magazine assumes it's satisfying. I really couldn't care less if this one critic from this one magazine did or did not like ONA Live...but the review he wrote about it is horrendous!!!...And it really IS scary to think that anyone who can listen to almost 3 full hours of Prince performing live and feels the 41 seconds of "Diamonds & Pearls" is the most compelling thing they hear actually gets paid for their opinion on music... The result of sending emails to VIBE will result in either:
A, They will piss themselves laughing. B, They will deliberatly diss Prince in order to get more laughs... or more likely... C, They will simply ignore Prince in the future because they can't be bothered with the hassle. Well done. | |

Their 'Letters to the Editor' section contains both positive and negative reader opinions. It's not like the 'ONA Live' review will be the first time they've ever received letters from readers who disagreed with them. I see letters from disgruntled readers every month. Some of our PrinceMusicGroupDetroit Members at yahoo sent an E-mail to NewPowerDetroit and had an issue with the Vibe review and I agree we should write them and speak our minds, We are NPGMC Members/Fam and were all Prince has at this point after his battles w/ the Industry and I must say he's done pretty well w/ his fanbase and the recent make up for delay on music through the online club. The reason I'm making such a big deal out of this is because they've been dissing his work non stop since the name change and battle w/ Warners and half of these idiots give Britney and Backstreet boys all the credit for great music when its just simple bubble gum tunes that have no place in our memory within the next 20years...plus any new artist like a 'Maxwell' or 'Remy' or 'Alicia Keys' are often compared to Prince, sorry to say when you purchase these records and praise them...your actually getting a prince record...because thats who their sound is like, and who they look up too...so why bite the hand that feeds them? He still delivers great quality work and I'm not just saying this from a fans point, but as a singer, musician and real music lover..Prince will blow these young ppl who think are our future Prince's, kings and Queens of pop off the stage anyday! Thats why I'm writing VIBE about this continuous diss on Prince's Music. He was doomed from the start, because it appears now he's caught in a mold in other ppl's minds and they can't seem to let the past be over and move on the whats new (THE FUTURE)! He's an ever evolving artist that needs space to grow and he's maturing very well...If Madonna test out new music, she's quote on quote trend setting and trail blazing and setting new ways to come with something exciting and refreshing, when truth is she samples and just takes everything thats been done in another (foreign) country and tries it on us and because she's madonna, the suppose mom of reinvention, it works for her...because she's never gave the indusrty any gripe, just shut up and did what she needed to do to kiss their butts! But prince plays everything and sings, he doesn't need their help, only to release records and their afraid , so they shut him out now...because he could be so much greater than Micheal and Madonna now...and its just a shame, so I'm gonna be one of the first to take up for him! because he's GREAT AND HIS BOX SET IS WONDERFUL!!! You are right. If I pay money to read the magazine, I am entitled to point out certain things I think are questionable where the content is concerned. Some of these reviewers and critics have their head stuck up their butts and someone should definitely check them every now and then just to let them know they are not even musicians themselves so how can they be good judges of what is good and what is not. Those who can do. Those who can't are called critics. The review wasn't just an unbiased opinion, it was yet another cheap shot taken at Prince just because he doesn't cater to the mainstream. | |
