I think the promo that was sent to music journalists in early 1997 was a tape.

The title track was released as a single, although I'm not sure was it a tape or a CD single. I think it also had "Don't Play Me" on it, or was it "Welcome 2 The Dawn" as the b-side. confuse

Yeah, there were still tape singles being released even in the late-90s though.

I remember npgmc offered a few of Prince's albums only in cassette right?

I specifically remember kama sutra could only be ordered standalone as a cassette.

I wonder what the reason for this is since at that time, I knew very few people who had tape players anymore.

i bought kamasutra on cassette recently. i love cassettes, there more fun, and they remind me of being a kid again lol

and also your not tempted to fast forward as its too much effort trying to find the next song so you end up just listening to the album as it was intended

Amazing that you guys know so many of these songs that I've never heard of!
Don't know what it sounds like, but the lyrics online are promising. Quite profound. Imagine if 1/2 of everything was a lie? Reminds me of the poem by Edgar Poe questioning if all we see and seem is just but a dream within a dream.

In 1996-1998 they were still fairly common as most hifi setups being sold had the typical double tape deck at the bottom of the unit (obviously people who had bought their stereo systems a few years earlier were quite likely to have them too). The tape format wasn't favoured by the big record companies anymore of course, and by that time most record stores didn't sell tapes anymore. The funny part is though that "Emancipation" was still released on tape too (yes, it had three tapes).

He was probably releasing them on tape because so many other small-scale independent releases were still released on tape as well. They were a whole lot cheaper to manufacture in smaller quantities, and Prince obviously wasn't intending to make too much profit on that stuff. Just wanted to eagerly get some material out now that he was a free agent.

It's not an all-acoustic record, since there are also some electronic instruments and even rhythmic programming used on some of the cuts. But most of it is acoustic, yes.
