Recorded: I Can't Make You Love Me
Live: Villanova Junction. NOT the version from Villanova Park. I believe it was from Paris 7/12/92. It's so smooth and mellow. Isn't the expression on my complexion enough?

I forgot the womans name. but i saw a interview where claims she wrote it and was surprised to c it turn up on emancipation. She also said she got a very SMALL check from Prince in return 4 the song.Technically not a cover, since it wasn't released prior to Emancipation, due to label snafus. Songwriting credits are Sandra St. Victor and Johnny Kemp. The original title was Sanctuary. Listen to Sandra's version here: http://www.sandrastvictor.com/ If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

On RECORD?? MAYBE.... Crimson and Clover..
As for LIVE and in PERSON.. (on record its SHIT) but "Everyday is a winding road" PRIOR to the release of Rave I was front row at the Mill City concert in MPLS and P Played this song prior to the release and that VERSION.. NOT captured on the bootleg of that show.. but the ENERGY of BEING there and hearing it crystal clear.. was ONE of my FAVORITE live Prince moments.. IF he could have captured that on record.. OMG. SO when I found it was officially being released I was about to wet myself, then I HEARD what he was offering us and was really pissed, seeing how crappy it was compared to hearing it live!.

Technically not a cover, since it wasn't released prior to Emancipation, due to label snafus. Songwriting credits are Sandra St. Victor and Johnny Kemp. The original title was Sanctuary. Listen to Sandra's version here: http://www.sandrastvictor.com/ Just listened to her version. I have a newfound appreciation for Prince's version. Not knocking hers at all, I would play that one as well. It's just the fact that he was able to take that and transform it into the version we know today is amazing. Prince's take seems to be a more personal experience...imo. Isn't the expression on my complexion enough?

When he sticks to funk / soul / Hendrix covers he does rather well, but when it comes to covering songs that are somewhat 'outside' his niche, he most of the times fails IMO.
Examples? I cant make you love me (Bonnie Rait): he spoils his rendition (and the impact of the original lyrics) by throwing cheap 'sex talk' into the mix. One of us: his production is simply horrendous, lump and over the top, spoiling the 'down to earth' roots-rock / americana approach of the original. And that 'slave' shit does make it even worse. Creep and The Long and winding road: He goes for a quasi-stylish, 'vegas-like' approach that doesnt do any justice to what the original songs were trying to portray / achieve.

one of us.
He takes a cute sing-along song and revs it up a few notches and throws in a great guitar solo for good measure.

[Edited 9/18/09 3:30am] he totally murdered that song, and not in a good way i was cringing throughout that entire performance! Me favorite cover has gotta be Honkey Tonk Woman, Rolling Stones cover "Not to sound cosmic, but I've made plans for the next 3,000 years," he says. "Before, it was only three days at a time."
