Reflection from Musicology... an appreciation.

I like this song... it came up on shuffle. Would you classify it as jazz or semi jazz? It's like he's telling you a story. I like this style.

If you like the album version, check out the Tavis Smiley performance with Wendy. Amazing! cool
Peace.
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I like the first half of the Musicology album much better than the second half (just not Life O' The Party...),

my faves are..

Musicology,
Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance,
A Million Days,
Call My Name,
What Do U Want Me 2 Do?

Reflection is ok, but not my fave off the album wink

I love this song and I realize there are jazz guitarists...however, I tend to associate jazz music with saxophone for the most part.

I may need a lesson in music styles though, I don't know where I would classify some songs. And with Prince, I have a hard time doing that a lot of the time. That is why I say, "Prince Music," is in a class by itself. cool

I like this song, it has a really laid-back, nostalgic feel. That being said, I don't consider it jazz. More like soft, laid-back rock. That sounds like an insult, but it's the only way I can think to categorise it. The definition of jazz usually involves either some level of improvised music or a swing feel. Let's face it, "jazz" as a pejorative term is vague at best. It means different things to different people. A case could be made that N.E.W.S., Courtin' Time, When the Lights Go Down, or She Spoke to Me is jazz. But in my opinion, not Reflection. The jazziest part of the Musicology Album is the swingy outro to Call My Name, even though the drums scream for the support of a walking bass. The closest Prince has ever come to real jazz in my opinion is the title track Rainbow Children. That really seemed to embrace the swing feeling and harmonic approach of modal jazz to an extent he had never reached before. Runner up is the outro to She spoke to Me. I sincerely hope Prince continues to push himself toward really discovering a jazz flavour in his compositions, as I think it could only help him to break free of his own cliches, and avoid superficial imitations of the artform. That being said, he's always had a unique approach, and maybe wanting him to do this is akin to wanting him to release a definitive, groundbreaking reggae album, or ska album. It's something that he occasionally flirts with, but will never 100% embrace. He is a wonderful and original artist and an improvising musician, and perhaps we should be happy and thankful for that. I sure am.

Love this song. I wouldn't classify it as jazz though. It always puts me in a melancholy state of mind. With the performance on Tavis Smiley with Wendy it got the stamp of instant classic in my book. I hope he doesn't forget about it when he tours again.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

It's a nice pretty background song with a very slight jazz feel to it but I feel it's a little too repetitive. Not musically interesting enough to be real jazz but for easy listening it's nice, along with On the Couch & Mr Man.

Musicology, Cinnamon girl & What do you want me to do though, from this album rock!

Yeah laugh at me for stating an opinion that lots of people on this site have. Or we could have a discussion which is what this forum is for. Why do you disagree with this?

One of my favorite Prince tracks ever. Definitely feels like some of the most from-the-heart lyrics he's ever written.

Don't know if this is jazz.

But I like this song.

For me, it's a nostaglic trip. It reminded me of my youth. My friends & I sitting on the stoop of the building we lived in, for several hours. One of our games: "punch car". We'd hit each other on the arm, when a Volkswagon went by. lol

Prince & Wendy performing it on theTavis Smiley Show was marvelous. I almost cried watching their synchronized playing. clapping touched

Once of his more 'sincere', humble, subtle lyrics from the last years.

I love his version with Wendy on Tavis' show.

Oh my God. I am so sorry. I don't know how this happened but... I thought this thread was called Reflections on Musicology. As if we were all reflecting on the song Musicology. Agh I am so sorry haha.

Reflection is an awesome, awesome song. Beautiful.
