HAS PRINCE LOST THE FUNK?

HAS PRINCE LOST THE FUNK?

Sometimes I believe he has lost the prince style funk on studio albums since he has been following his relegion, following trends.
Throughout his career funk has been his main music. From controversy, let's work,
head, america, trax on 1999, sott, parade, the black album, exodus, various b sides etc.
Last time it was mentioned prince came out with the the infamous black album.
he came out with gett off, sexy mf etc.
Once sonny t michael bland morris hayes and tommy barbarella all replied fresh by sly stone would be prince funkiest album if he had 2 pick 1.
Is it still in his blood?

on record 100%, live ? = never!.
When was the last time you heard him kill it on bass on CD?, Chelsea Rodgers & 3121 perhaps? but aside from that very little. His funk is very JB / P Lite and lacks so much. Don't get me wrong his funky stuff on the last few CDs is as funky as anyone else is puttin' out BUT P used to deliver funk that was different, had an edge etc. Yes I will now say it, he ain't as funky as he used to be in the 80's!!! and before you all say I will now go and dig out the 1999 cd and all my fave B-sides! razz

His 40's have showed a time of his music shifting. He went from his 20's being funky (DMSR, Computer Blue, Lovesexy), to his 30's being incredibly prolific, inspired by a muse of conflict, hard edged and searching (Gold, Endorphinmachine, Race) to his 40's watering his music down a bit (NewPowerSoul CD), to flat out boring while approaching 50 (Musicology, LotusFlow3r).

He started out being 40 with NewPowerSoul and Crystal Ball. It went downhill from there. So has he lost it? I knew, as a final nail in the funk coffin, that when he "surgically removed the funk from DMSR" on the BET awards (or Essence awards, whichever...maybe BET Image Awards?), that it was over. That was before 3121 came out, and he performed the medley with Sheila, The Time, etc. "DMSR" never sounded worse. I was so embarrassed by and for him. When he refuses to even say "whore" on TV, it's over. So yeah....his funk is just a sweet, awesome memory. Right now, he has big aspirations to be the next Yanni. What's next? His Red Rocks concert on a PBS telethon.

Of course the funk is not just about lyrics but also about the one.
Why doesn't he write stuff with that every once in a while?
Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

[I think 1 Prince/Funk thread per user would be more than sufficient for one day.

Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.
