The article was not that GOOD! It seemed like another radio critic wrote an article about a box set that he listened to 1 time. Talking about Disk 1 is "problematic" because he obviously didn't like the new FUNK groove. Ooops, I forgot ... probably under the Teen POP rock! ___ Empty Room is the new jam! A mind is like a parachute...it has to be open to function. - Bumpersticker #348

Thanks for the article.
I was in the laundromat where they were selling the new york daily. I didn't have money but I really wanted to check it out. I kept waiting for the vender to look around so I could get a sneak peek but then a woman comes and bought the last copy.

Disk 2, however, nails the vibe and reach of the best Prince shows I've witnessed in the past 20 years. It's a kind of best-of rundown — from "Raspberry Beret" to "Do Me, Baby" to "Diamonds & Pearls." They're refigured into a monster jam that keeps building. The elaborated form makes the songs seem fluid, free and new.
B-level songs "Joy in Repetition" and "Dorothy Parker" move up to "A" status. This just exemplifies why many critics have their heads up their asses. Many of them are all about the commercial hits and can't think outside of that purely POP ARENA. They want to keep a recording artist inside that narrow assed box of their own limited expectations, but yet call JIR and DP B level songs. Spare me. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

It still seems that the best review of ONA Live is Brendan's. I'm not just saying that cause he's an org member and Prince fan, but he clearly took the time to fully listen to and feel ONA Live. He reported the positives and negatives in a way none of these reviews, so far, has come close to.
While I realize professional music critics have to listen to and review God knows how many CDs, it seems they could have given ONA Live a little more time since it is Prince's first official live release.

That's very kind of you, shygirl. And don't go getting shy on me. Your comments about the mainstream press are very shrewd. Many of them are overworked and have to churn out formulated reviews that say very little. Even the ones who like or love this release -- and I think the current count is something like 15 to 1 in favor -- don't sound as though they have explored this release much at all. But unless you are a mainstream artist who sells at mainstream levels, you just aren’t going to get much more than 3 or 4 paragraphs, if that. I'm very glad that I make my money elsewhere and don't have to earn a living this way, as I just couldn't live with myself writing countless formulaic reviews after spinning a disc once or twice. I got to live and breathe this stuff in the hopes of even glimpsing what an artist was attempting. And even then I usually fail more than I succeed and end up regretting a particular sentence or sentiment. I wrote this review mainly due to being greatly inspired to do so by the music. But the other reason was that at the time there was literally no other formal review available except a 2-paragraph one from People Magazine. Even the fan sites didn't have anything. Of course a big part of that was because a large portion of the fans hadn't received their copy yet. The biggest surprise in this whole thing to me has been the large volume of email and org notes I've received over this article. And they continue to flow in even today, and most are from people that I've never seen anywhere in the Prince on-line community. There's a large silent group out there who are loving this box set who either don't have the time to post, are simply not interested in doing so, or are too shy or intimidated to share their opinion. Thanks again for your kind words. Brendan
