Prince could've had all the 'worldwide exposure' YouTube offers by just letting users post his videos in the first place, or having an official Prince YouTube channel where he can get one of his underlings to post them. This was just about $$$.

Yup - it was about money AND artistic control - but, what is wrong with that?

Prince makes music as art and as a means to make money - his 2 primary concerns. Seems to me he was just looking after his art and his business.

What would have been the benefit of the added "worlwide exposure" (which, he gets anyway) - the only answer is "more money". So, it doesn't make sense calling him out on blocking his content because is was "just about $$$", you know?

Perhaps because the deal with PRS is fairly UK specific. That said, Prince is a member of PRS (as I said, most songrwriters are) - so, as a member, if they strike a deal on your behalf to pay for use of your music, you go with it and wait for the paycheque. I knew about it some weeks ago, as I am also a member of PRS and they wrote to all members informing them of the deal.

Whether Prince has some individual, exclusive deal with YouTube I do not know - but I do know that as his songs are listed with PRS, the PRS deal ensures that his songs will be played and paid for.

Prince is a member of ASCAP. But ASCAP and PRS have signed a reciprocal agreement for the representation of each other’s members’ works in their respective territories and therefore PRS can collect on ASCAP's behalf in the UK.

I'm puzzled why YouTube should strike a deal with PRS only. Despite the reciprocal agreements, PRS is only allowed to collect money for performances on UK soil. But YouTube broadcasts content all over the internet and so it's a performance that spans the globe. The big problem is that all these collection agencies have not adapted their policies regarding the internet and many of their rules have become obsolete since the rise of digital music.
In this case, ASCAP should be first in line to collect money because they directly represent the artist in this case.

The dr FB post suggests that Prince struck a deal with YouTube individually but I find that hard to believe. Firstly because I think that YouTube would want to avoid dealing with artists separately and instead deal with the copyright agencies that would allow them to unblock entire catalogues of music instead of one repertoire.

Part of the problem is that Warner Bros. is ALSO being militant about getting its property off of Youtube.

SPECULATION: If Prince does not follow through with protecting rights that he claims he has over his music, it's possible that Warner can say that Prince is in breach of terms.

I hope it is true, so many can check out his music....

If you see the George Harrison tribute classic "while my guitar gently weeps" on you tube, you can see how surprised many people are when they see him play like that.... ^^

What you write is true, but he is also a member of PRS and has a PRS registration number. I was offered ASCAP membership when I signed with PRS, but I don't need it at this time, as we don't perform in the States (hopefully, that's a "yet" wink )

I can't see Prince changing his mind on his copyright stance, he's fought half of his career for that. But it's just a rumor so far. Time will tell.

This isn't prince changing his mind on copyright issues. His making videos available under an agreement protects his rights.

Oh please. All artists should get paid for the work they do, not just Prince. Do you go to work and expect to get nothing? Come on now. It was always about money and it appears Prince will be getting his and I say good for him. I want to see others get theirs too.

Most likely, Prince has had his official YouTube account approved with YouTube, ASCAP, etc, to make sure he gets the correct royalties. Don't expect random Prine footage showing up all over YouTube. Expect only official approved content.

I know that with my band, our music videos have to go through the official YouTube account of the record label, and not ours, otherwise it makes it harder to collect the royalties.

Exactly. The hope now is that he will build on this and let all of us fans post video again like in 2006. We've made it this far and by faith, we'll get back to that place again. pray This is still wonderful news in my book. nod

What happens when we link videos to threads for the purpose of discussion? Will Youtube have to pay for that or will he come to the sites asking for money? Watch, he will. Piece of shit.

So Prince cons fams into shelling out 77 with the hopes of getting videos.
Prince gets youtube to pay him to host his videos.

Prince makes money off fams, doesn't have to invest the work on his own site and makes money off youtube. Gluttony is a sin, someone should tell him that.

Yeah, but when I quit a job, can I go back and ask my old employer for $$ for work I did for them oh say back in 1984? They would laugh at me, just like I'm laughin at you.
He got paid when those songs were released and he still is through Royalties. YouTube is merely a promotional ticket that all artists use and 99% of them don't complain about.

No point in arguing. It could very well happen but this is all brand new so I know about as much as you do which isn't much. He may not do anything to this site if we link a video to a thread here. We have to see how this all plays out.
