First Prince Album?

I am interested in what people had as their first Prince album. I would like to know other info as well:
1. What was your first album?
2. When did you get it?
3. What format (tape, cd, record, electronic)?
4. Does the album have special meaning to you?

Here is mine:

Symbol album. I got it in December 1992. I bought the tape. To this day, it is still my favorite album and it has 2 of my top 25 Prince songs in 7 and The Continental.
I abdicated the throne in Ithaca, but now I am...

I had Purple Rain on tape! biggrin
It was 1984, I can't remember the month but it should be Fall.

(I remember listening to When Doves Cry all summer on the radio, driving me crazy in a bad way because I didn't like it at all!!! duh It was so unlike anything I had ever heard! It really pissed me off that it was on No1 for so many weeks! Can't remember exactly when I got into it, but it was winter when I went to see the movie, so somewhere in between...)

I can't decide on a favourite album since I've not listened to all of them yet, but Purple Rain sure holds a very special place in my heart and it always will! biggrin

You live in Ithaca, NY?

1. Prince was my first album.
2. After I listened to "I Wanna Be Your Lover" on a K-Tel album called Soundwaves
3. LP
4. Everyone's 1st Prince album has special meaning probably, however, the K-Tel album is more special to me. I actually have two copies of it on LP still today.

1. The Symbol album was mine
2. I got it in 1992
3. On tape (still have it despite much wear and tear)
4. It has VERY special meaning to me. This was the album that started it all and it reminds me of literally falling in love with Prince! I know it has some terrible tracks (My Name is Prince, The Flow, The Max), but is has some of favorites too - Sexy MF, The Morning Papers, 7. Love it.

I was a casual radio fan, until I purchased Sign of the Times on cassette in 1987. Once I truly listened to it, I was hooked by his freedom of expression on so many taboo topics... He just seemed so comfortable in his own skin with topics like sex and God and love... And then there were awesome tracks that just seemed to say, 'yeah, things are jacked up, but fuck it, lets dance like there will be no tomorrow!'

After Lovesexy, I was hooked like a crack whore.

My first album was SOTT I got it on cassette a few weeks after it came out having already bought the 7" of the title track.

It took me a while to appreciate it it was more challenging than the stuff I'd heard before but once I'd got into it I was hooked and started collecting all his albums and singles looking out for non album Bsides in particular. I was SO excited when I found the 12" of Little Red Corvette with Horny Toad on the flip side for like 80p!! Happy times!

The first album I own was Purple Rain. I somebody gave me the cassette originally as a child and I later brought it again. This had 2 be early 90's when I brought it but, I got my original cassette in tha late 80's. That's my first album I brought and own. Tha album is special 2 me and the movie as well, of course. My mother had the LP while I was growning up, so the album was always around me. I remember even spinning the record backwards 2 find out what was being said at the end of 'Darling Nikki'. LOL! CLASSIC!

Batman (I loved the comics, so i had to have the album!)
1989 (as it came out)
cassette
loved it so much. nuff said.

then got ATWIAD (tape) it was cheap? I think £4.99 from Our Price.
PR (vinyl)
LOVESEXY (vinyl)
1999(vinyl)
SOTT (vinyl disk 1 only!)
SOTT (tape) swopped it for something or other.

then GB about 6 months after it came out.
the hits 1 & 2 (on crappy bootleg cassette - hey, I was a student)

then Prince, Dirtymind

then Symbol (a few months after it came out)

Controversy & For you (on a trip to Madrid with college)

finally D&P way after it came out!?

then every album as it came out after that... starting with Come (ironically the last Prince album proper)

The first record I bought was the Hits 1+2/B-sides along with the Purple Rain DVD. I didn't know much Prince other than the usual ones u hear on the radio, such as PR, RB and WDC. But I had always wanted to hear more. I got the 3 disc set in HMV. It was reduced from £24.99 to £9.99 so talk about a bargain! After a few listens I couldn't believe the diversity of his work. It really blew my mind. And of course the fact that the songs kicked serious ass! The first song I fell in love with was I Would Die 4 U. Beautiful! The B-sides disc got the most plays though. Theres some gems in that. I also was intriged at his tounge in cheek lyrics. When I looked at the back and seen the song "I Love U in Me" I expected to hear a real funky, groovy sleazefest and then when I hear it, it's a beautiful keyboard/vocals based track. Then watching the Purple Rain DVD sealed the deal. Prince fan for life! Before Prince, I only listened to hard rock/metal. Thank u Prince!

1999 on vinyl was my first Prince album, I bought it in my local record shop Pladepusheren in feb. 1983.

Unfortunately I gave it away to a girlfriend in 1987, in a try to convert her to Prince music.

I don't own it no more. sad
