There are about 5 versions
ranging from 9 minutes 2 14 minutes the PR lp version is an edit the infamous Hallway Speech If you've heard the song on the PR tour they did a bit of of the parts not included in the lp version also in the movie the scene where Bobby Matt & Brown are rehearsing that jam/riff they are doing is from the extended version Na Na Na Na Na Na Wave your hands in the air Now everybody say it Na Na Na Na Na Na

Genius! Yes it is GENIUS, it's WILD, RAW, TORTURED ahhhhh!!! Father, the son is gone!! that linn drum just drove that song This song is an example of how Prince music never needed a whole lot of drum spectacles and rolls and riffs, the most straighforward beats always worked for his music

I find the riff of computer blue and nelly furtado's maneater.
one is done with the guitar and the other with the synth. does it sound similar to others?

The full length version of this song should have never been shelved. Can anyone imagine having this on a 12-inch single back in 1984? It would have been awesome.

Totally Agree | |

You only need two versions of this: the raw, demo-like angst and feedback-ridden St Louis Park Warehouse take; plus the so-called Hallway Speech version. I'm pretty sure it was inspired by The Doors' The End, judging by the speech...

It's just relentless and gets more and more intense as it goes on - can easily see why it was trimmed though...would have killed any momentum the album had built up but it defo should have saw the light of day as a 12".
One of his best songs IMO.

He didn't like living alone
The house where he lived had many hallways It was a long walk 2 his bedroom Because 2 him each hallway represented an emotion Every one vastly different from the next One day while she was with him He decided 2 name each one She walked by his side, one hand on his thigh No - she was sort of half a step behind him Yeah, the grip on his thigh intensified As they walked slowly through the corridor He named the hallway "Lust" And as they passed through the next one He named it "Fear" The grip she now loosened So he walked faster Her hands now trembling She let dropped 2 her side as he wrote the word "Insecurity" He looked into her eyes and smiled a demon smile And quickly walked onto the next Corridor after corridor He named almost all when suddenly… he stopped He picked up the word "Hate" She was gone So he picked up another – "Pain" On the verge of a breakdown What is life without love? It's hell, Computer Blue! Father, Father, the sun is gone (Father, Father) The Dawn, the Dawn Father, Father, where is the Dawn? (Where is the Dawn, Father?) (Na, na, na, na, na) {x2} Na, na, na, na, na Shall I go 2 church on Sundays? Shall I stay home and pray? Shall I try 2 make her happy? Shall I try 2 make her stay? Where is my love life? Tell me, where can it be? Narrow-minded computer (Somebody please, please tell me…) It's time someone programmed U (Somebody please, please tell me what's wrong with me) It's time U learned women are not butterflies They're computers 2 Just like U Computer Blue (Where is my baby?) Chauvinistic computer It's time someone programmed U (Na, na, na, na, na) U fall in love 2 fast and hate 2 soon And take 4 granted the feeling's mutual (The feeling's mutual!) We're computers 2 Just like U, Computer Blue Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

1 of my favorite parts of the PR movie was when Prince asked the rehearsing members of the band where are Lisa & Wendy. That part of Computer Blue sounds alot like the Power Stations "Some Like It Hot" which came out later

Computer Blue is one of Prince's best songs ever.
I actually like the cut and paste version that someone made of the 12 minute version, complete with hallway speech. It's made up from different sources, including the released version, so the sound quality dips in and out at parts. Not the ideal way to listen to a song, but until a pristine copy of the 12 minute jam surfaces, this is as good as it gets. I like the 14 minute one, As a musician it's Prince in one of his most creative, experimental moments. Out of the many versions I have, this is the one I like most. I also agree with the righteousone in that the 14 minute version would have put the album out of balance.
