I actually just read a study that stated that because of the way our brains are wired and how they develop, the music we hear between the ages of 16 and 25 will always sounds like the "most inspired" and will always be our favorites. We simply hear more of it, hear different levels and make emotional connections to it that we do not do later in life.

So, if you objectively take a look at some of the songs on LotusFlower, Dreamer and Colonized Mind come to mind...and compare them back to stuff in the 80s I think from an objective point of view they compare VERY well. We just can't make the emotional connection we used to make so it sounds "uninspired" to us...

This was actually a sad thing for me to read because it meant that I would never quite be moved again like I was at that age. But, it did explain a lot...

That study is dead on.....4 the Colonized mind.

I'm bored, too.

It's not anyone's fault. Prince is doing his thing, I'm doing mine. I do miss the excitement of new videos, concerts, albums that didn't suck, websites that actually had informational content (HQ included!). It's like someone else said, it's like you have a friend and then one day you wake up and realize you don't have much in common with them anymore. You try to salvage the friendship, but 'hanging out' seems like a chore. What do you do? Throw away all the years of good memories or try to stick it out in hopes the old spark will come back?
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I'm also bored with Prince and have been for quite awhile now. I heard Lotusflower and MPLSOUND for about a week and never again. I didn't even bother with the third disc.

I was willing to forgive his whole, anti-fan, anti-youtube, JW bs. I saw One Nite Alone and love it and I'm a hardcore atheist. But, I think the turning point for me was Coachella, what? two summers ago? His Coachella set was a Vegas act and it was brutal to watch, especially coming on after Portishead who completely kicked ass.

And before I get crucified by the fams, I have a life thank you, and I listen to all kinds of music and I will always respect and love the Prince music I grew up with but he's just boring to me these days.

Really??

I was there to (Coachella) and I thought it was the other way round.

Portishead were just dreary - especially on a Saturday night. Geez I nearly wanted to slit my wrists by the end of their set.

Plus I don't find their music dynamic. She (can't remember her name, sorry) has a very nice voice, and sings with a lot of angst and emotion but to me the band (Portishead) seem to be a one trick pony.

And after awhile it all starts to get a bit depressing and 'Oh, no, not ANOTHER sad song... sob, sob..'

Whereas Prince is upbeat and fun, yet he can still do melancoly and sadness.

I thought his Coachella set rocked and was the best and most mischevious that I've seen him for a long time.

Puting on Morris Day and Sheila E first was very funny I thought. I don't think the crowd knew what to make of it.

But it worked because all these people were chomping at the bit to see Prince - and they were a lot of non-Prince fans there - so it was sort of ironic that they were so pissed that he wasn't up on stage and playing his hits. I thought it was very clever. Not sure if it was meant to be, or just my interpretation of it?!?

eek
Shut up already, damn.

Prince has done something that I never expected. He has left me bored. Just a little introduction to those who don’t know me. I was a writer and researcher for UPTOWN and have been a super fan of Prince for YEARS, but lately… he and I have had different paths. I can look through my CD collection and remember how much his music is the soundtrack for my adult life. I remember the date I had to Purple Rain, the girl at the Recka Stow that sold me SOTT (we ended up dating based on our mutual appreciation for Prince) and how I used to play his sexy songs to seduce the woman that became my wife, but somehow, Prince and I have not grown together. I still respect his art and his amazing artistry and would never tell the man what to do, but as a listener and a fan (oh sorry, FAM), I’ve stopped paying attention. I saw him in Vegas and he was amazing. It reminded me of when I used to be against the stage at GLAM SLAM LA back in the 90s, but I also saw him recently here in LA, and the stage set up looked like a high school dance decoration and his shtick hadn’t changed. He posed more than he performed. He was doing a greatest hits of his moves, but anyone who had seen him as much as I had knew that he was walking through it. His latest 3 disk set had so little memorable music on it, that I stopped listening to it after a few tries. It sits on the shelf next to his last several uninteresting disks… at least to me they are uninteresting and uninspired.

I used to want to hear every note, including the outtakes, but lately… it all blends into each other and I realized something important. Every album, every tour, every pronouncement is filled with the promise of greatness. Sadly, most of it goes unfulfilled. Yes he will occasionally do a Super Bowl show or Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show that blows us all away and reminds us of why he is indispensable to music, but the rest of the time it is largely a let down. I say this as someone who was right there during his biggest times and literally listening and watching every concert that was circulating. I say this as someone who thought the man could do no wrong (I defended UTCM for God’s sake!). I was an addict.

Back then there was a buzz for him. There was a solid group of collectors who traded music, videos, memorabilia and scripts. I remember waiting for packages from all over the country and for my issue of Prince Family magazine. I remember trading for tapes (yes tapes) and looking for a version of a song I may have already had that was 1-2 generations better than what I already had. I miss that time, and realize that my life has gotten more complicated and my Prince habit went from a daily jam to checking out the Prince.org site ever few weeks, or even months. I realized that with the lawsuits, etc. goofy videos, cancelled plans, etc. that my interest in Prince has faded. His music went from erotic to erratic and (for me) sadly bland. If he was making groundbreaking music still, I could overlook how little respect he has for his fans, but he isn’t. He is cranking out music that he likes, but the songs don’t speak to me anymore. Again, I would never tell a talented artist like him how to make music, but I also don’t have any obligation to continue following him and I’ve realized that is what my interest in him is… obligatory. I can’t let go completely because I know that there is that amazing album or box set or something even better to come, but mostly… I am chasing a high and not getting the same buzz I used to get from his music. I know I am not the only person out there that hopes that Prince’s best days are ahead but wonders if they are mostly in the past.

I also wonder if he knows it too.

Wow madhouse.. I salute you for this post!

I love it because it brings out the PASSION in everybody.. and isn't that what it's all about? Can you imagine these fierce sorts of arguments, debates about any other recording artist?

When people tell me they don't like Prince yada, yada, yada I want to show them a thread like this and say 'Look at all people's concise and strong opinions on him...people can talk for hours about Prince and what they think about this and that and what he means by this and why is he doing that...

You seriously can't ever get bored with the rollercoaster, you can end up passionately disliking one piece of music almost as passionately as liking another. I love it!

That's the beauty of Prince, you never get bored..

I would respectfully suggest two things.

1. once an addict always an addict, you crave the feelings you had when you were younger but dont get the thrill any more, even base jumpers tire of the highest mountain if thats all on offer, which leads me to point two:

2. you have simply grown up. You dont get excited about stuff like you did way back when. Its not prince its you and how you have changed.

I still get that high when I hear certain tracks I can remember the feeling I had when I first discovoured them, plus I have to dance thats what he does for me. At the aftershows in 2007 he was exciting, he still has it, hes merely evolved.

personally i like his recent offerings, theyve taken several listens to fully appreciate the extent of the music, Ive also matured but I do think you can clutch at your younger self when you listen to Prince.

Dont be bored, BE WILD!

This is hilarious.. it sounds like the sort of advice you offer a friend who has split up with his girlfriend...

I especially like 'It's not Prince, it's you'

Meaning Prince has moved on and you haven't... bless... wink

Although we don't share the same opinion, I have to say I like your post. It has meaning, it's respectful and it has reasons. The rest is just opinion- (and probably age-) based.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey.

How about just enjoying an artist who after 31 years.....is still going strong? He won't be around 4 ever.

That there is pretty much it.. I started listening to Prince with Musicology, 3121 and then went back, to his great 80's releases, and now I just got Gold, and the man loves to make music. He's not entitled to try to reach the place that he was in the 80's. The music wasn't just his talent, it was the things going on at the time.. world events, personal life, his age... his music reflects today someone who is in a different stage of his life...I personally agree that his 80's and some of his 90 releases are better than his newer stuff.. but hey music is subjective right?
