Prince footage in Bill Maher's Religulous film

Hi all,

i just watched a very interesting film from Bill Maher called Religulous.

There is a section in the film where he talks about how religious figure heads, such as evangelical pastors and flamboyant priests etc, can be compared to rock stars. The flamboyant, decadent clothes, robes, outfits, the huge number of fanatic followers, crowds of heretical people etc. They show a quick bit of footage of Prince from the Purple Rain tour, with Prince wearing his green paisley PR outfit. It shows the Revolution band and the stage draped in the floral PR trademark. I have seen that footage before and I am wondering where it is actually from. Does anyone know? Was it a TV performance or from one of the shows that was taped? The quality is excellent, very clear and I would love to know if that footage is available. I wouldn't be surprised if Prince somehow tries to sue Bill Maher for using this footage. Is it stock footage? Maybe he can get around copyright as its a news/type reporter angle. Anyone else seen this? By the way, I highly recommend the film.

From your description that sounds like the American Music Awards performance of Purple Rain. It aired January 28th 1985.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I haven't see this film, although it could've been good to have the, "Lord's prayer," from Controversy during the Prince segment as well. (Without the video.)

I love the video but it is dated. cool

Ahh, that could be it. I think I have seen that footage years ago. I have certainly heard it, but not necessarily seen it in years and years. That would fit though, I will look into it. Thanks smile

I just looked into it and yes I can confirm this is what Bill Maher used in the film. Unmistakable. I love that look with the green, the long coat and the white cloud guitar. Lisa is wearing a hood draped over her head, Prince's performance is stellar, his guitar solo is brilliant. He kicks the mic stand over and does a big fist pump! Love it.
