James was a junkie, too rock n roll for Prince.
Prince is a lady, he was not into hemp and drinks, at least lately.

How about this: He's a shy guy when it comes to the big dogs. He did very few things with Clinton (only when the latter was broke and really down), and nothing with either JB or Sly, just to name the 3 biggest influences, probably. (And actually he never was toooo down with Stevie either...) What he did was gather the smaller fishes around him, always. Actually, that's not uncommon for control-freaks and egomaniacs. Seen that way, no wonder his time with Miles was short as well. What do you think?

Prince was definately an insecure Narcissist who went a long way to surround himself with percieved inferiors. The men who he admired were also "N" but also hardcore cats who manifested insecurity an frightening ways, James was at a vulnerable place when Prince became "the man". I'm not sure he would have taken too kindly to this pretty little guy wanting to hang out and jam LOL. He liked Mike because he knew Mike from an early age and considered him from the old school, and although shy too Mike was very reverential-almost to the point of tears. Prince on the other hand is a dog, very competitive back in those days & would incorporate any shred of mojo (of people, the enviornment) he thought he could use-James dont play that shit, he'll cut ya LOL.James, by the 80's was buggin way too hard prince to have wanted to hang out and im not sure JB would have liked him too much.Funny, when Prince made the big comeback with Musicology in 04'there was a part of me that felt like it reminded me of James in 86.Not a comback to actual musical relevance but the publics way to take an OK enough single Market it around the totality of the artist career and "give"them a cheap grammy or two.
