Prince's Inspiration for Rockabilly-type Songs Hey,

He's covered Chuck Berry and Elvis before, and he kind-of looks like Little Richard on the cover pic for Controversy. | |

Possibly equal parts Clash, The Beatles and very early James Brown, with a dash of Adam And The Ants. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot. | |

I wonder if it was an early attempt at 'crossover' with a white audience (at least to an extent), or rather, a reaching out beyond the Soul/Funk niche that he'd otherwise have been stuck in...
I doubt he's ever been that immersed in the stuff, probably just the things you hear on the radio. As DerekH said, he's covered Elvis and Chuck. As yet no Charlie Feathers renditions... Those type of songs sort of dry up with 'Purple Rain' don't they? (replaced with a variety of other genre experiments) like he doesn't feel he needs them so much...I'm trying to think of examples from after 'Delirious'. There's rock'n'roll-y stuff ('Play in the Sunshine', 'Can't Stop this feeling I got') but not quite the same Rockabilly type thing. 'Girl of my Dreams' maybe, but he didn't release it. I love those songs, I really like the fact he's done another one with 'No More Candy', good to see he's retained the knack. [Edited 9/7/09 14:33pm] | |

What's the Billy part? is there a particular instrument associated with the sound of this style.
