So wrong on so many levels. Prince hit R&B radio well
before When Doves Cry with Soft and Wet,I wanna be your lover, Controversy,Do Me Baby. Even if you are trying to say that was his first crossover hit. Hell no! 1999 and Little Red Corvette introduced Prince to pop radio and maybe even Delirious to an extent. All of these songs gained Prince a following before When Doves Cry was conceived. Obviously Purple Rain was his biggest commercial success. There was nothing on the Purple Rain album musically that set it apart from 1999,Controversy,or Dirty Mind which i consider his classic period. It's all about timing. Purple Rain was in the right place at the right time just as Cameo's Word Up was in 1986. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

No effects... Erotic city does not count. Update...I have just been informed by org member Elcapitan that "Delirious" may have been the first commercial success ... meaning it garnered (AirPlay) and topped the charts first, where Prince exhibited this register. [Edited 9/7/09 8:19am] Wasn't Little Red Corvette his first 'commercial success' - about 2 years before WDC?

Ithink the underlying message here is that people like that Prince voice. I know so many peole that loathe falsetto and because people are quite basic they percieve it as feminine. Purple Rain the film and album was(even tho he was plastered in make up and wore heels) Prince's only time with a truly male (Socially perceived) image. The femininity that was there could easily be swallowed up in the fashions and attitudes of the time. Any freakishness could at this point go under the radar

[Edited 9/8/09 4:43am] I was thinking either that or 1999. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

[Edited 9/8/09 4:43am] I was thinking either that or 1999. I think LRC was his first top ten single, although you're right 1999 was released previously.

Not over here in London it wasn't! Eveyone at my school was convinced P was gay during those years. He looked a lot more male (and a lot more of my school friends got into him) in 1986, withouth the frills.
