..."When Doves Cry" Prince's deep voice, unquestionably garnered his first commercial success. This is what gave this song so much depth and put it into the category of one of his greatest commercial hits ever.
No effects... Erotic city does not count. Update...I have just been informed by org member Elcapitan that "Delirious" may have been the first commercial success ... meaning it garnered (AirPlay) and topped the charts first, where Prince exhibited this register. [Edited 9/7/09 8:19am]

I guess the poster meant "commercial hit", but I can think of some that were hits: "1999", "Little Red Corvette" "Diamonds and Pearls" and "Cream" etc.

No one can read....
What does "Commercial hit" mean in the English vernacular? (meaning the song played on the radio) If you never heard Prince sing in a deeper voice.... "When Doves cry" I will argue is the first. Not later in his career... Not on a cd b-side.... Not in concert... ON THE RADIO!

To be fair to MM, I think the cat was trying to say that When Doves Cry was the FIRST song that P sung in his "deep" voice and which was released as a single. To me, the "deep" voice that P employs in this song is P's natural register. Which is hella similar to P's speaking voice. I remember vividly when this song first started getting airplay on the radio. It hadn't even been released as a 45 yet. I remember friends of mine trying to say that this wasn't Prince. I was like "What?! The fuck it ain't! Hell yeah it's Prince!" They would say "But it doesn't even sound like Prince." Then I would say "Yeah it does. Listen to the music. Listen to the keyboard melody on the chorus! Listen to THAT guitar intro. THAT'S Prince!" "Yeah but listen to that heavy voice. That doesn't sound like Prince." "Yes it does! Listen to the way he goes up into his falsetto on "Why...this is what it sounds like" right here at the end. Listen to that guitar solo right there! Who ELSE could it be if it's not Prince?! That's Prince, man!" I was saying this before the 45 and of course the 12' was released. Because all anyone would have had to have done was hear P's screams on the full version "Baby....Baby....Baby, Baby, yeeeeeaaaaahhhhh!!" ONLY P could scream like that. But yeah, definately P singing in his more natural alto register gave the track a way more dramatic feel to it. It matched the lyrics and subject matter perfectly. And to think, he came with this AFTER the PR album was completed. The film's producers felt that they needed a lead in track to jump start the promotion of the film and although they thought the songs on the PR album were good, they didn't feel that any of them had that "kick". So they told P that they needed something else that would tie in the characters and the story of the film more in a song and a day later, he came in with THIS! One of the most important songs in P's career and to me, one of his best. [Edited 9/6/09 18:01pm] SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

[Edited 9/6/09 18:01pm] Thanks,, We are on the same page. In other words, his full range had never been demonstrated commercially (Radio Play) and yes many didn't know that was Prince at the time... 'When Doves cry' was so much different from any album prior. In fact,,he even changed his look if you'll recall...gone were the bikini briefs and trenchcoat...No more falsetto. It was a whole new Prince. The dawn had begun... You just had to have been there... Right on! [Edited 9/6/09 19:33pm]
