It is hard to answer, especially for me as this is still my favorite Prince album. I think for your average music/hits follower the album is too complex with respect to music, lyrics, packaging etc. Those are exactly the reasons I loive it. I also think the whole is better here than the individual songs.

You can't fake the freak that well.
Prince was never a freak. It was all fake. He was a conservative good-boy who waved a fake flag as his schtick/marketing tool. The Prince of now is the actual Prince he has always been. . [Edited 9/7/09 11:00am] Somehow I beleive this. After all, he was raised in the midwest by 7th day adventist mother. He had to adopt some conservative way'ss The fact that he frowned on drug use and reports that VAnity's freakiness actually put him off seems to support this idea. Plus look at the women he marired and was serously invovled with (engaged). All of them came from similar conservative backgrounds and only did the freakiness as an act. His "conservative upbringing" was that he bounced around from home to home and ended up in Andre Cymone's basement. And why would he even hook up with Vanity to begin with if he wasn't trying to get his freak on! Because of her awesome singing voice? And the fact that he's married women 20 years younger than him, one of whom he met as a teenager, while the second he met when he was still married to the first girl (whom he dated as the same time as Nona Gaye) doesn't strike me as the most conservative moves he's ever made. Dude was (is?) a freak at heart. "What kind of fuck ending is that?"

The fact that he was bounced around as a teen had to do with his father, whom I never thought was conservative. He left mom because step dad was too conservative. And when his dad cracked down on him, he moved to Andre's house. Somehow I think Andre's mom was a little more lenient. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

Pretty and sexy doesn't have to equal cocained out model who did a sex scene with a gorilla on film. I'm sure he could have found someone a tad more conservative if that's what he wanted. As far as why he bounced around as a kid, that's exactly what I'm saying. He left the strict households and ended up in his friend's basement whose mom wasn't as strict about letting girls hang out in the basement with a couple of teenage boys. The cover. The gay look he was seeming to promote. I mean , come on. I love Prince, but there was no-----way I could have worn a naked prince shirt to school and not get beat up. Throw in the other fact that Alphabet St was the only good single on the CD, and you have a NUMBERS failure. If you want one more reason, its because Hair Rock was now ruling the charts back, then. Guns N Roses, Def Lepard, even Poison, were huge. E.

I prefer to refer to it as Cock Rock. YOU LIKE SPANDEX, YOU'VE GOT THE HAIR! NOW IT'S TIME TO ROCK OUT WITH YOUR COCK OUT!!

The 1st picture should have been the album cover
and then when we open it the 2nd picture is one of the included, another nasty one and inspirational one of the band should have been included TheKing662 said: I guess you can call this my "Around The World In A Day Thread"(get it?Prince released Purple Rain, then he end up releasing a album totally different)

You all realize the Lovesexy album cover is great right? It has been listed in various art books as a great cover...
I can see how some people would be put off on being seen with it... but...(that's why their not BIG) The key reason the album didn't do well= there was no strong top ten hit that became a cultural staple.... no pop song that tapped into or created what was catchy and cool at the time. that's it! I am maybe late here, but LOVESEXY is a hell of a great album, the world just didn't understood it then, the world seems to still not understand it,
But it's one of Prince's brilliant, most challenging albums, a 10/10 masterpiece imo. And yes, the cover pic is great as well, I just everything about this album, Prince 4Ever.

Rightly said: After all's said and done, Lovesexy was very well recieved in Europe.
praps da man is a bit too much of a wildcard to for american public. likewise I thought Lovesexy was a success for Prince. How do you define a success? Well it's Lovesexy and its not Lotusflower.

jcurley said: ElCapitan said: Gotta agree with this sentiment also. I think the imagery of Lovesexy is "light and breezy", but the sound is anything but that. Sorry I can see what you mean. the sound is quite dense in parts but its the prevading image of I wish you Heaven that sticks with me. But yes Anastasia and even Positivity have a very dark sound. also I think it is light because however much people go on about the musical complexity of the album I don't see it as complex as something like Crystal Ball-the track. There is still an element that Prince could have farted this out (Even tho I like it). However good it was it was rather arrogant of Prince to release this at this point in his career. For people in 1988 they would have received this the NEWS album the album had lots of horns, lots of tambourines, lots of gospel singing and screaming, lots of energy and overall lots of joy. To me its light and fluffy but with a big heavy meaning attached to it - not one that we could all understand at the time, but I beleive Prince himself was confused at the time with his own values and thats what this album brilliantly portrays the conflict for his desire to love god and sex at the same time. We had to pay the price when the terrible TRC came out as a kind of penance where Prince wanted to God to forgive him for his evil ways in the past. Its all part of his journey.
