The Rave Un2 the Year 2000 dvd concert OK so Ive had this dvd for 4 years now. I only watched it once. Its a pretty good concert until Larry shows up. i enjoyed the performances of Shes always in my hair & The time is a trick part during Purple Rain, but the concert couldve been much better. So how do u feel about this concert and whats ur fav performances?

Honestly, Morris Day and The Time = the true highlight of the performances that made the DVD. This is not Prince at his best, but I imagine it would have been great to have been at Paisley Park for this show, just for the showmanship of it all.
Larry's presence doesn't immediately piss me off, but after a while.....between him, Cynthia, Gerry, Lenny, etc.....it's obvious that it's all about a party for all involved and not so much a Prince concert.

the only part worthy really is the bass guitar duel, the bent over backwards guitar solo, and the splits. otherwise this concert pisses me off at how he could have used the time 2 promote the rave un2 the joy fantastic album but didn't.
and the so called bonus features of music man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I like it. My favorite performance was She's Always In My Hair. That guitar solo was amazing!

I thought it was moving, just fast forward if it really bothers you that much. The song keeps getting better and better till the final climax to the point where your heart's emotionally drained from all the awesomeness spewing out of Prince's guitar and lungs "Not to sound cosmic, but I've made plans for the next 3,000 years," he says. "Before, it was only three days at a time."

Prince and Larry's performance of "Purple house" is legendary. One of the Best I've ever seen. but a lot of it was cut out on that dvd. Luckily I have it. [Edited 8/24/09 16:13pm]

They shoulda stopped Larry at the door. I've watched this many times with my friends over the years and everytime Larry's mug hits the screen they all go,
"UGH!" LOL. I love a Man who:
Wears More Make Up Than Me. Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots. Changes His Name To An Unpronouncable Symbol. Who Changes His Name Back From An Unpronouncable Symbol. Oh And Most Importantly, Who Is Sexy Little Drop Of Butterscotch

Don't like his blue costume, don't like the editing. Slo mo bits are really crap! The performances are good. Highlights for me include him showing up Lenny Keavitz, that massive extended bles guitar solo. Don't know why they cut up greatest romance with the video clip, couldn't they have included the clip as extras. Considering how hard his band was funking with the recent tv performances of Face Down, Dorothy Parker, Prettman, Come On, etc, I wish he'd continued more along those lines. It was a pretty glossy commercial show. Don't hit me, but maybe he should have used Rhonda on bass. Larry didn't really do anything special that night.
Let's hope we get a Montreux dvd to compare it to! Take it - like Clarence said:

As much as I think Larry Graham is Prince's very own Yoko Ono, I enjoy the Purple Rain performance on Rave 2000 because of LG's bass part. There's a nice bottom to this version that is usually missing from most P Rain performances. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

True enough, the man can definitely play that bass. Just wish it stopped there. Yes Hatman - Rhonda is the preferred bassist for me for anything Prince has done since the Experience recordings, even though I love Sonny T as a player. [Edited 8/24/09 22:54pm]

Except that it wasn't. Fans were left outside in the cold for hours while celebs were rushed in. IIRC not that many fans were allowed in, and the reason there's no atmosphere on the dvd is because most the celebs weren't into the concert, it was just another celebrity perk. © Bart Van Hemelen
