Musicology's jazzy influence was an excellent introduction to the freshly polished funk, that was 3121. 3121 served as a bridge to MPLsound, a raw and crisp return to MPLS funk. Y
I love both CDs. | |

MPLSound is marginally better than Musicology.
They're both awful though, so it's not saying much.

Sad but true. yes i agree although Musicology was produced perhaps a little too much and you can really here that a lot of work went into it

minneapolisFunq said: musicology might be stronger all around due to the three ballads along with hey valentina that clog up the middle of mplsound
but in my opinion the stronger songs on mplsound are better than the stronger songs on musicology. so i prefer mplsound. what he said! My Legacy

And in reference to the OP mention of capturing the Minneapolis/Prince sound, I think MPLSound does it much better.
I think even 3121 is closer to a classic sounding Prince album than Musicology. My Legacy

To me it's a tie between those two. MPLS and Musicology sound like cousins, with MPLS only sounding slightly newer. I think Call My Name won a grammy though. It's funny how it's been 5 years and MPLS doesn't sound that much newer than Musicology. I believe when the lights went off in the vault Musicology and New Power soul f*cked and gave birth to MPLS. Musicology, It has very strong ballads and MPLSound misses that. Musicology also has the stronger songs like 'The Marrying Kind'. May U live 2 see the dawn...

I would take Better With Time and Here over any of the slow jams on Musicology. [Edited 9/4/09 7:31am]

why would i want a glimps into his past when i have already seen it anyway? It makes sense to move forward and see new things. Mplsound. Its new and all the way through killer. not looking backwards only looking 4ward man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

musicology tour didn't compliment the album at all, if that was true then he would have done more songs from the album instead of all the old songs Indeed. Musicology tour sure was fun, but it did nothing for me musically and there was nothing new. Same old hits played in the same old way, crowd pleasers - fair enough - but I would have loved to hear Call My Name, IIWTMIUL, The Marrying Kind, Reflection, ... In that case the Rainbow Children tour was magnificent. Loads of stuff from the album, loads of newly arranged songs from the past which haven't been played too often and a great band. Love it. That's what he should do with Lotusflow3r/MPLSound too.

I never understood the fuss over that song. It may have won a Grammy, but my ears, it's no more than a poor mans U Make My Sunshine. Better With Time is truly sublime though. The way it completely transcends towards the end in such a climatic way... it's very rousing and powerful.

Both are great songs, but to some ears the ending of Better With Time with all the layered vibrato vocals and the percussion section may sound a bit cheesy. Maybe I just need to be left alone with BWT for another few months, although I already love it, but so far, Call My Name just has more class, somehow.

I find "Call My Name" to be one of the best Prince ballads of the last 10 years. Lyrically it's excellent and describes the first time someone "called" his name after he was for so long. It's almost like he missed being called "Prince" by his woman. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I like both but I think overall Musicology is a more complete album. To me, MPLSound is just 1 segment of Lotusflow3r.
If we're comparing Lotusflow3r overall vs. Musicology, I'd go w/ Lotusflow3r. * * *
