Musicology's jazzy influence was an excellent introduction to the freshly polished funk, that was 3121. 3121 served as a bridge to MPLsound, a raw and crisp return to MPLS funk. Y

I love both CDs.

MPLSound is marginally better than Musicology.

They're both awful though, so it's not saying much.

And in reference to the OP mention of capturing the Minneapolis/Prince sound, I think MPLSound does it much better.

I think even 3121 is closer to a classic sounding Prince album than Musicology.

To me it's a tie between those two. MPLS and Musicology sound like cousins, with MPLS only sounding slightly newer. I think Call My Name won a grammy though. It's funny how it's been 5 years and MPLS doesn't sound that much newer than Musicology. I believe when the lights went off in the vault Musicology and New Power soul f*cked and gave birth to MPLS. JMHO.

Musicology, It has very strong ballads and MPLSound misses that. Musicology also has the stronger songs like 'The Marrying Kind'.

In that case the Rainbow Children tour was magnificent. Loads of stuff from the album, loads of newly arranged songs from the past which haven't been played too often and a great band. Love it.

That's what he should do with Lotusflow3r/MPLSound too.

Better With Time is truly sublime though. The way it completely transcends towards the end in such a climatic way... it's very rousing and powerful.

Interesting. I find "Call My Name" to be one of the best Prince ballads of the last 10 years. Lyrically it's excellent and describes the first time someone "called" his name after he was for so long. It's almost like he missed being called "Prince" by his woman.

I like both but I think overall Musicology is a more complete album. To me, MPLSound is just 1 segment of Lotusflow3r.

If we're comparing Lotusflow3r overall vs. Musicology, I'd go w/ Lotusflow3r.
