It was a paint-by-numbers work by Prince.
A pleasant enough tune, but after a series of excessive but none-the-less very uniquely Prince-like singles (sexy MF, My Name is Prince, 7, etc.), Prince releases this bland and unremarkable song in comparison. To me it's the first single he released that felt like he didn't care anymore. The entire COME album is just so-so. Some parts pretty good. Others meh. Prince himself wasn't terribly enthusiastic about COME. I remember reading the Q-magazine article where a reporter was invited to hear his new albums. The reporter said that Prince appeared impatient with COME, skipping tracks and speeding through the album. But when he played the Gold Experience for the reporter, he was totally doing Air Guitar and other things to show how enthusiastic he was about the album. I imagine the reporter was talking about the configurations for GOld and Come closest to what ended up being released. Whatever it was, Prince appears to have deliberately tried to subdue one album to make the other appear more interesting and fierce. I do find it fascinating so many people love COME. Its just not that great an album.

Letitgo is my favorite song off the Come album. There's something about it that brings me to my happy place. It actually stops the demons that are screaming inside my skull for five minutes and 32 seconds. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I'm pretty much with squirrelgrease on this one.
I think it is a pleasant enough tune, you can argue about the quality of it being released as a single, but we can do that for another dozen or so tracks. A video would have helped, but P and WB were at full on "no speakies" In the end it was WB who wanted the track. As for what Imago has written, Come and Gold Experience are complementary. Recommended reading is the post Ultimate Come by scififilmnerd on this whole period to get a better insight on the decisions taken by all and sundry. It also explains the shifting tracklist for both albums, which in the end didn't help either release, but taken collectively was quite an impressive quality of work. Prince is a musician not a lifestyle.

One of my favorites. | |

I forgot it was even on Come. I found it very underwhelming - and as stated previously, the first time you could tell he didn't care anymore.
But the title track is just so killer.

The lyric is ace and very introspective... For someone often accused of hiding his true self he sure deals with a lot of personal stuff on that song... and deal with he does, in a surprisingly mature way. Possibly his most revealing song, for those who care to listen

I love this song!
When I first heard it, it was on the radio and I just kept jamming it but the radio station said it was Color Me Badd and I was like huh? Later, I found out it was Prince and I was relieved! Um... let me warm up my vocals

Great song, unlike most of his 90's input, songs like Letitgo and 7 have a definite Prince vibe.
I love Come, his music was focused and original,he wasnt aiming to ape whatever producer dejour happpened to be making hits for the kids at the moment. Like "Letitgo", Come also had "Pheromone" and "Solo", distinct and original music worthy of Prince. Whether Prince was more enthusiastic about "The Gold Experience" at the time says more about his attention span and the all around whacked-out person that Prince was throughout the 90's than anything else. To me most everything from Come still sounds fresh, even more so than when it was first released. The same cannot be said about "The Gold Experience", as bad as some moments in Come, I cringe through most of "Gold" except for "Shy" and "I hate U" which seem better suited to Come in the first place.

Well, even though I find most of the material on Come first rate what really spoils the album for me is the lameass addition of Orgasm at the end and the decision to leave Strays off the tracklist. Man, that last track was a toe-curling moment and really prevents me from appreciating Come as an album... So, a few bad decisions with the tracklisting of Come really killed the album for me. I much prefer The Gold experience

Nearly every song since 1994 by Prince has been under-rated. But 'Letitgo' does originate from something of a 'golden' period.
Interestingly (if you are a nerd like me), The 'Come' and 'Gold Experience' tracks were not originally intended to be seperate.

Agreed. 'Come' is one of my favourite Prince albums. It has songs unlike anything anywhere else in Prince's released output. 'Pheromone' still sounds incredibly fresh and focused and, IMO, is probably his most risque and 'dark' song since 'The Black Album'. 'Race' remains his greatest song addressing these issues. It is mature, non-divisive and evolved. 'Dark' is a sublime bluesy ballad and the 'harp' section at the end just kills it for me. 'Solo' is hauntingly good. 'Interactive' and a rawer version of 'Endorphinemachine' were originally intended for 'Come' and in retrospect, it is a shame they were not included. If you place 'Endorphinemachine' and then 'Space' on CD you will see how they segue into one another effortlessly. 'Interactive' was the original opener. The poem parts were together as one track called 'Poem'.

It's a very good song and I'm especially impressed by the depth of the lyrical content:

It's a nice funky song.nice lyrics, nice groove,I have nothing against it, but it doesnt move me.If Interactive and Endorphinmachine was on the album as originally planned, this would've been an awesome filler instead of a lukewarm single...IMO

Interesting to read the varied comments. I have to say that, although I too appreciate the depth of its message and confessional lyrical content, musically the song just doesn't move me. It lacks energy and the beat reminds me of that Milli Vanilli beat that has been done to death in pop songs. Not very imaginitaive. A shame too, because to my ears the Come/Gold era sonngs generally are on fire with energy and inventiveness (Endorphinmachine, Interactive, Days of Wild, Come, Now...) Conversely, Letitgo just sounds dull and uninspired. Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com

its the only song off Come that i listen to. it was years b4 i even knew that the song i liked on the end of a video of a Prince tv marathon was actually from that cd seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before

It's interesting that 'Letitgo' seems to be either loved or hated. I personally really like the song. I don't think it's bad. It's track #2 on one of my mixed CD's and I always jam to it. It's a laid-back, head-bobbing tune. I always knock my fist in the air on those two beats... y'all know which ones I'm talking about.
Until now all I wanted to do is... I could read you poetry and then we could make a story of our own.
