IS this s review? Its lame. Do you have a day job or something better to do than dig up shit like this?

Look, fool, I didn't have to "dig up" the review. It was posted in a newsgroup a few days ago. Since it's a retrospective review of Purple Rain, I thought it would be of interest on a Prince website.

Sorry I couldn't find anything about Prince's dick to stoke your interest. evil

I was reading in one of the movie review newsgroups when I came across a new review of Purple Rain that you guys might find interesting. The reviewer says that Morris Day should have had the lead role in Purple Rain.

Yeah, that's the type of casting that would have been even more believable...

I'm trying to imagine the film with Prince playing Morris's role and Morris playing The Kid. It wouldn't have worked.

The Kid was a moody, charismatic character, whereas the Morris character was a slapstick comedy role.

Prince tried to play a Morris type comedy role in Under the Cherry Moon and it didn't work. Morris was very good in Purple Rain, but I really think the script writing helped out there. He played the same character in Grafitti Bridge and was less successful because the script for GB was weak.

it's so twisted with the Role Playing.Prince helped Create&Mold the Morris Personna&Yet Only Morris Day could pull it off??Morris used that Role in Purple Rain,Graffti Bridge&Other Film Roles&TV Shows&Sadd too Say it served it's one Big Pay Day&then Fell off.Morris helped with His Own Lines He was quoated as saying He didn't like the Original Writing of the role.He said it had a More Buffon Element He wasn't cool with.

Exactly. Although I wouldn't say the script for PR was great, it was better than either Cherry Moon or GB in terms of character definition. And it presented the lead/supporting characters with nothing outside the realm of their limited abilities. You could substitute certain professional actors into different roles in a movie and it would work, but these guys are musicians and musical performers, not actors. They were painted that way because it wasn't beyond their grasp. They were all basically the same folks you hear on record.

Interesting observation. Prince did help create and mold Morris Day's persona, but when Prince tried to play the role that he created, he couldn't do it as well as Morris.

There is another example of this in the music world. The singer-actor called Meat Loaf does not write his own material. There is a guy named Jim Steinman who writes all of Meat Loaf's songs and helped create the Meat Loaf persona. Meat Loaf became a successful singer-actor using the music and persona created by Jim Steinman.

When Jim Steinman released an album that he had written and tried to sing in the same style of Meat Loaf, Steinman's album flopped. Steinman, like Prince, tried to step into a role that he created for someone else and it didn't work.

It would almost be like Dr. Dre trying to step into the role of Eminem/Slim Shady. Dre may have helped to mold the persona, but he himself can't step in and play the role.

Prince&Jim Steinman got a Page out of the Movie the "Idol-Maker"&also the Formula within the Business.Ever Major Act that truly Hits Big is Clonned off.
