If I have understood correctly, it's a word Prince invented at some point for his fans, because he didn't like the word coming from "fanatic", so he proposed "fam" instead, coming from "family". Some ill-humored people in here who like twisting things use it like an insult to imply certain members are obsessive/delusional/you name it, for not dissing Prince on any opportunity.
