I always thought it was an off-camber reference to Travis Bickle and/or the child prostitute ("Annie Christian was a whore") in Taxi Driver. Reagan's assassination attempt is mentioned and Hinkley was obsessed with the movie and it's star Jodie Foster.
Annie Christian Annie Christian wanted 2 be number one But her kingdom never comes Thy will be done She couldn't stand the glory She would be second 2 none The way Annie tells the story She's His only Son Annie Christian wanted 2 be a big star So she moved 2 Atlanta And she bought a blue car She killed black children And what's fair is fair If U try and say U're crazy Everybody say, "Electric chair!" (Electric chair!) CHORUS: Annie Christian, Anti-Christ Until U're crucified I'll live my life in taxicabs Annie Christian, Anti-Christ Until U're crucified I'll live my life in taxicabs Annie Christian was a whore Always lookin' 4 some fun Being good was such a bore So she bought a gun She killed John Lennon Shot him down cold She tried 2 kill Reagan Everybody say, "Gun control!" (Gun control!) CHORUS "Liar, liar, liar!" Gotcha in a jam Put your head on the block Somebody say, "ABSCAM!" (ABSCAM!) CHORUS © 1981 Controversy Music - ASCAP http://www.dtt-lyrics.com...html#annie If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I think it means that until Annie Christian (ie, the anti-Christ or the evil in the world) is caught, then he will not feel safe walking the streets and will spend his life getting cabs.

^^bingo also this song is so badass...listen to that crazy guitar in the background gping off this song is underrated in my book. It's either anti-music or its punk, new wave, and rock all together. Check out a live performance from the Controversy tour if you can find the tape etc Someone have that promo poster of Annie from Warner Bros still?

GREAT song! Powerful. Such an empty song, soundwise, and yet (or perhaps, because of it) so strong, unique and intense.
I love that it has two melodies at the same time that complement and take turns so well. The vocal melody and the constant guitar solo work brilliantly here. squirrelgrease said: So she moved 2 Atlanta And she bought a blue car Funny, I always heard "new car". Somebody say, "ABSCAM!" EXTREMELY underrated gem. One of my faves from Controversy. Sparse but layered. I think the first 10 seconds have a strong techno feel and probably influenced early Techno (at least for Detroit techno pioneers like juan atkins and derrick may; who had a steady diet of Prince thanks to local dj legend Mojo). but great song, still as progressive as ever

The car he was driving when he was captured was blue. Abscam was an FBI conducted criminal investigation in the 1970s and 1980s which brought down several prominent politicians. The "Ab" was for Abdul, a phony store-front that the FBI operated out of. Annie Christian was like an early prototype for the headline influenced lyrics of Sign O The Times. This song is one of the ones that made me a diehard Prince fan, I wasn’t into the "Do Me Baby" type of Prince songs or any of the safe stuff, here was an artist creating some out there funky stuff beyond any kind of label.
What do you label a song like Annie Christian anyway? POP? FUNK? NEW WAVE? ROCK? I think its all those things rolled up in a batter of purple manic euphoria. Awesome song, “Pheromone” was also marinated in this same stuff.

xlr8r said: Bangin'...Now I WISH I had this as a poster. This is just as rare as the P mannequin poster, I believe. I wonder where is the girl in this pic today? She was certainly a cool part of P's history. She has that Carrie thing happening. Dig the large crucifix hanging on the wall. Which was also prominent in the film Carrie. P always had pics with writting on the walls behind him back then. In this case, obviously the chalk board. But in his Dirty Mind/Controversy period, he always had messages usually spray painted on walls behind him. [Edited 8/28/09 2:18am] SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. This song was one of the jams from this album that everybody dug. This used to be part of his set list on the Controversy tour. But by the time the show got out here at the Santa Monica Civic in early 82, P had yanked the song from the set. His managers thought it wasn't cool for P to stand up on the top level ramp pointing a gun towards the side of the stage during the song. I have a poster of this that was a centerfold in Soul Magazine where P is pointing a gun. He looks like he would use that motherfucker too. P was crazy as hell back then and I dug it immensely. This song is a pure example of New Wave Managers are good, but when you have an 'underground' artist like this they should realize what the music genre is and how it works, This song was Prince's 1981 Sign o the Times [Edited 8/28/09 6:01am]
