Surprised Prince Never Sued On This One

Sounds identical to The "Beautiful Ones"

Probably had to be there. It was a nice lil slow jam back in the late 80s....

Yeah, the chord progression on the intro chorus is similar. And her vocal melody as well. It also sounds more Prince-ish with the male vocal doubled along with hers. It's very stripped down compared to The Beautiful Ones. Not anywhere close to being as musical.

Exactly...and if they copied it further it would've been even more obvious than it already was...lazy, lazy musicians.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

If this isn't a tribute, it's a huge rip of The Beautiful Ones.

Love it though.

that reminds me of those proactiv acne commercials that rip off bruce hornsby.. they're close enough to give people the idea of what they're copying but probably not close enough to win a lawsuit over

i was watching some retro clips on youtube and there was an old nickelodeon game show from the early 90s that had background theme music ripping off 'batdance' hardcore, lol

I see what you're saying to an extent. Granted, the chord progression "sounds" similar although the chords are different to that of Purple Rain. To Buddy Guy's credit, who's a legendary blues artist and one of the great electric blues guitarists....the chord progression in this song and Purple Rain AND Faithfully from Journey, are all very standard progressions that have been around forever. Not saying that Buddy didn't like the song Purple Rain...Many known musicians love that song. Eric Clapton has stated that it's his favorite song by anyone, and Eric loves Buddy as well. But again, the chord pattern and it's movement in the songs mentioned here, are fairly common blues/gospel chord progressions. I think Alicia Keys's track "Like You'll Never See Me Again" is waaaay more Purple Rain -ish in it's musical stylings than Buddy's.

I see what you're saying about this being a traditional blues progression. Thinking about it some more, it does therefore seem as if I was disrespecting Buddy Guy here which would certainly be uncalled for, the absolute guitar legend that he is. Thank you for your response.

Its the Beautiful Ones verse melody on loop, sans the hook. I kept waiting for "You were so hard to find..." but it never came. Bah
