Billy Corgan talks Prince on The Hour Don't think it's been posted before...
Canadian show (The Hour), Corgan speaks of glory of Guitar hero and how it's reunited people's interest in music again. Also the evils of the record industry and how they had the whole system sewn up from distribution to the hookers who used to service the radio guys. Then of Prince (and the record industry): "Remember Prince in the mid 90s, he tried to be independent? I mean, they (the record companies) destroyed him. He had to go back into the system. And it's Prince; one of the greatest artists of the 20th century."

Cool. I hadn't heard of Billy Corgan mentioning Prince before (at least I don't remember).
Billy Corgan and Prince seem to be similarly driven artists. Both are wonderfully gifted multi-instrumentalists with ego-centric control issues. Both are prolific studio wizards that have lost sight of quality control in the latter half of their career arc. Both men are notoriously difficult to work with. I dig 'em, though. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Both of them have recently a lot of great songs killed by the poor production.. I've heard Billy is a big Prince fan.

Well, remember, Billy Corgan and Prince ARE connected in some way!! Wendy Melvoins brother, Jonathan, was the drummer in The Smashing Pumpkins, before he died and Prince wrote The Love We Make for him!!!

Actually, he played keyboards during the Mellon Collie tour in 95/96, not the drums (yeah, right..I'm big Pumpkins fan ) [Edited 8/27/09 1:39am]

IIRC, Jonathan was with Jimmy Chamberlin (drummer) in a hotel room when he died..Billy then fired Jimmy because of drug addiction. I have never noticed that Jonathan was Wendy Melvoins brother! So thanks for info Oh, and as non SP fan you're missing some pretty good music

There are things Billy does with the guitar (especially on Siamese Dream) and even some of his vocal moves that lead me to believe he listens/listened to Prince quite a bit.

"The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page
