Prince Hiatus

Do you think it would help or hurt his career. I was watching a video yesterday with various artists discussing prince. Little Richard said that he thought ppl would appreciate Prince more if he didn't release albums as frequently as he does; one or sometimes two or more a year.

* 1978: For You
* 1979: Prince
* 1980: Dirty Mind
* 1981: Controversy
* 1982: 1999
* 1984: Purple Rain
* 1985: Around the World in a Day
* 1986: Parade
* 1987: Sign o' the Times
* 1988: Lovesexy
* 1989: Batman
* 1990: Graffiti Bridge
* 1991: Diamonds and Pearls
* 1992: Love Symbol Album[78]
* 1993: Goldnigga
* 1994: The Beautiful Experience
* 1994: Come
* 1994: The Black Album (recorded in 1987)
* 1995: Exodus
* 1995: The Gold Experience
* 1996: Chaos and Disorder
* 1996: Emancipation
* 1998: Newpower Soul
* 1999: Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic
* 2001: The Rainbow Children
* 2002: One Nite Alone...
* 2002: One Nite Alone... Live!
* 2003: Xpectation
* 2003: N.E.W.S
* 2004: Musicology
* 2004: The Chocolate Invasion
* 2004: The Slaughterhouse
* 2006: 3121
* 2007: Planet Earth
* 2008: Indigo Nights
* 2009: LOtUSFLOW3R

I know he's a workahilic (not a bad thing) but if he gave himself 2-3 years (not on tour or releasing anything) he could perfect a great album and more of the "casual" listeners who hopped on the PR wagon in the 80's would appreciate it. It would also be a great way to attract new fans.

Im interested in ur thoughts so pls discuss...

Little Richard would know about a hiatus. He been on one for about 20 years now! As for the casual listeners if they haven't figured it out after 30 years then 2-3 more isn't going to have them backtracking to find all the missed opportunities.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Whatever you were watching was from a long time ago. Prince doesn't need anybody telling him what to do. He's not new to this business!

Besides, the longer he has to play around with an album, the longer it has to be chopped about, fiddled with, overdubbed and cow bells inserted... If he gets to release a project before the ink dries, all the better smile

Prince may rush some tracks but others have sat for ten(or more) years before he felt right about releasing it. He's done pretty well thus far. I think he has a future in this music biz!

i was thinking the same thing but i feel sometimes that some of is recent albums (PE & Lotusflow3r) felt rushed and if he would have spent more time they could have been better. Not saying i dont like the albums but some of the tracks felt like fillers to me.

Remember he was going to take a "sabbatical" (were those his exact words or did he just say take some time off?) after the 21 Nights concerts in 2007.

I don't think he ever did. He must have been working on most of Lotusflow3r 3 CD set in that time - although some tracks were older. He. Just. can't. stop.
Just somewhere in the middle,

The quality of Prince's work and the ability to pick the right single is what will help or hurt his career, if by help you mean his commercial sales.

There's never been any correlation between the speed with which Prince creates and releases and album and it's quality (He basically squeezed LoveSexy out of his ass in less than 2 months, and it was brilliant).

Interesting topic.

My hope is that Prince has made enough money so as to never be able to spend it all, no matter how much he tries.

Because if that is the case, then he can release all the music he wants, as often as he wants, and it doesn't matter if he's number 1 at the bank.

But if Prince still foresees a potential cash flow crunch at some point in his life, then it behooves him to limit his releases.

All the money these days is in touring, so maybe the real question should be about tours.

I wonder how many songs prince records in a year. The only unreleased songs we know of this decade is Turn me Loose & that was an amazing song.

i understand semi what ur saying in terms of a business point of view, but if prince is getting the majority of fees from a record sale, he still profits more 2day then he did back then even by selling less units

The frequency of his album releases are not without merit but ultimately I think that if he released albums every second year instead of every year he would make better albums.

He also mentioned a song titled "The Divine" and said it's so good he may never release it.

NO NO NO Prince has too keep on recording and putting out all of his amazingness at the times he feels most fitting. Which happens to be very close together. And i certainly ain't complaining about that!

You see, being a Guns N' Roses fan who waited over a decade for an album, things were not fun. It espcially didn't help that the album sucked and tanked.
this raised the question, would us GNR fans appreciate simaltaineosly released albums more than one being released every decade or so? HECK NO

clapping

it was only last year when prince didn't release a album and people were jonsing 4 the next album. prince's music is like crack and without our fix, we we start getting crazy around here getting shakes and shit. i don't want 2 imagine this place if prince took 2 years or more 2 deliver a album shake

I don't believe anything would hurt Prince's career because he carries music in his blood...To express that talent is a blessing. I believe that any woman in Prince's life would never want to distract him from offering the world or the fan community pieces of his heart.

I also believe that if Prince decided to take time to smell the roses and played the forest a song, Prince would be a wealthy man as nature welcomed his offerring. cool
