I wanted to see if anybody was going to mention that part. Yeah, I saw this when it aired on Feb 26, 1985. Just a few days after I saw him for the second time at The Forum in L.A. on the Purple Rain tour. The Grammys that year were at The Shrine Auditorium, also out here in L.A. It was a great performance, even the part when the mic popped him in the mouth. Hard.... But P being the true pro that he is, didn't miss a beat. He got that ruffled sleeve loose from that gawt damn mic stand and kept on steppin'. I always prefered P at the AMA, almost exactly a month earlier, on Jan 28, 85 when he totally turned it out performing Purple Rain. To me, THAT'S his best television performance ever. But yeah, this one at The Grammys too was good. I also liked when Wendy's father, Mike Melvoin, introduced the band...That cat was besides himself with joy and pride. [Edited 8/26/09 0:34am] i think someone has the gif of when it pops him in the mouth but yes it does speak 2 his professional side 2 just keep stomping man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Those glorious Old School Jams from back in the day that we all hold in such high regard make up about 20-30% of what I listen to on any given day. I read this somewhere on the org some time ago. I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

Ah well...I'm just glad I was around to see the real/true Prince back in the day, AND have it documented in my "collection".
I guess you want a cookie for your "collection". Well I never saw Prince in the 80's or 90's but since I started going to Prince concerts in 2001, he put on a hell of a show everytime I saw him which has been 11 times so far this decade. He showed me that he still has that fire when he's on that stage and he gives it his all which, whether he stands there or dances all over the place. The last Prince show I went to was in October & he didn't move around much but it was a small room we were in so he couldn't do much anyway. Even with that limited space, he was on FIRE that night and it was one of the best P shows I ever saw and that wasn't even a year ago. My friend saw P with me for the 1st time in 2004 and she's not much of Prince fan at all. She told me that it was the best concert she's ever into HALFWAY through the show, so you can't speak for non-Prince fans. When you have the gift of music like that, you can sit on the floor and just sing and still move people if it's coming from your heart and soul and that's what Prince still gives me and many others, including non-fans who see him when he's on that stage. [Edited 8/25/09 9:31am] No, no cookie for my collection's needed, but I just threw that line in because most of the ppl around here will say that if you like his past concerts so much, then pop it in and watch them over again. I was beating them to the punch and saying not to worry, I already am! And, you say you haven't been to any shows prior to 2001. Well, that's what you have to base your comparisons off of. I've been to countless others prior to that year, and I've seen/noticed the steady decline every tour - post 1997 - of the showmanship aspect in his performances. Dancing doesn't automatically equal show, as you put it, to me, but move around some dammit!! You AND the band! And, I'm not talking about the tired Texas Two Step, which everybody and their momma does in their sleep. I'm glad your friend like the Musicology show, but she's a "newbie". Had she seen some his previous shows (she probably would've been a Prince fan already if this was the case), she would probably say the same thing that I am. That it paled in comparison to how he used to rock the house. I'm not saying he can't "perform" anymore, but I just don't get that "wow" feeling in the pit of my stomach when I watch/listen to him these days (musically or visually).

Ahhh, another post where someone thinks a 51 year old man should be able to dance like he was 25. If you can't enjoy watching Prince's expressions, guitar playing, keyboards, drums, etc., then stay home and leave your seat for someone who appreciates the talent in whatever form he brings it. [Edited 8/25/09 18:57pm] He's played the drums and keys when again? And, I never said I wanted him to dance like he did when he was 25. Never in my post did you read that, so stop putting words in my posts. I said I just wanted him to basically MOVE a little bit with the band. Hell, the band's back there looking bored half the time. That's cool that you're wowed like a little schoolgirl watching the teen boy band of the day, but I'm not, and there's nothing wrong with either one.

Even with the early mistakes with him knocking the mic down and hitting himself in the face was quickly 4gotten. He totally was turned up and on high watt speed during this per4mance all the things he fit in that short little segment was amazing. Kind of like the NAACP 2005 per4mance... U were left scratching ur head saying what did i just c? At the end of it..... That's no lie. I didn't even know that he hit himself with the mic until I came here and I had seen the performance many times. He's just that amazing on that stage. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I always cringe when I see the mike wack him across the face.
Maybe its cause he's always been perfect. Apples looks in it aswell. I always prefered the Purple Rain performance in the AMAs. He gets his payback when he kicks the mike onto the floor!!!! You can see the crowd stand when he does this, so awesome it was. Awesome rendition, awesome outfit, awesome solo, awesome overall.

That response had nothing to do with what we were talking about (even remotely), and came off like a 2 year old rant (...and it surprised me, I previously had the impression they were more mature than that). Damn,...I forgot all about that one....Yeah, when P performed the track Sign of the Times and Sheila with that white hat on and that half of a body suit she had on....And she and the whole band came marching down the aisle playing a snare drum. Then they all marched up on stage and lined up behind P. P was killin' it with the peach cloud guitar. Yeah, that award show was ALSO out here in So Cal! Good pick...I never see people mention that one on here and I tend to forget about it. I used to have that on vhs but the tape ribbon snapped. I STILL say the AMA in 85 when P performed Purple Rain is my all time tv performance...But shit,....I gotta say the 87 MTV performance is right behind it because THAT was a super cool performance no doubt. When I was a kid, if ONE MORE ADULT said to my friends and I: "Enjoy it while you're young", I swear - I think our heads would have exploded. We WERE enjoying it, we were just tired of hearing it, lol. I had a Biology teacher in the 10th grade, Mrs. Bumgarner, that kept a sign over her door that read: "These ARE the good old days", and we used to make fun of that sign everyday and sarcastically smirk... "Yeah Right!". But NOW, decades later when I think back to that sign... GUESS WHAT?!? To put things in perspective: Music ALWAYS sounds better when you have memories to associate it with. Memories take time to develop. Trust me, there will be a certain number of today's songs that you feel SUCK now, that will bring a nostalgic tear to your eye when you hear them 25 years from now. Oh yeah, it'll happen, lol. Enjoy your teenage years: Play safe - Live long and prosper! VERY nice post. oh and very cool of jesusfreak as a teen to defend us "oldies" "not a fan" yeah...ok
