I always thought it was an off-camber reference to Travis Bickle and/or the child prostitute ("Annie Christian was a whore") in Taxi Driver. Reagan's assassination attempt is mentioned and Hinkley was obsessed with the movie and it's star Jodie Foster.

I think it means that until Annie Christian (ie, the anti-Christ or the evil in the world) is caught, then he will not feel safe walking the streets and will spend his life getting cabs.

GREAT song! Powerful. Such an empty song, soundwise, and yet (or perhaps, because of it) so strong, unique and intense.

I love that it has two melodies at the same time that complement and take turns so well. The vocal melody and the constant guitar solo work brilliantly here.

EXTREMELY underrated gem. One of my faves from Controversy. Sparse but layered. I think the first 10 seconds have a strong techno feel and probably influenced early Techno (at least for Detroit techno pioneers like juan atkins and derrick may; who had a steady diet of Prince thanks to local dj legend Mojo). but great song, still as progressive as ever

This song is one of the ones that made me a diehard Prince fan, I wasn’t into the "Do Me Baby" type of Prince songs or any of the safe stuff, here was an artist creating some out there funky stuff beyond any kind of label.
What do you label a song like Annie Christian anyway? POP? FUNK? NEW WAVE? ROCK? I think its all those things rolled up in a batter of purple manic euphoria.

Awesome song, “Pheromone” was also marinated in this same stuff.

This used to be part of his set list on the Controversy tour. But by the time the show got out here at the Santa Monica Civic in early 82, P had yanked the song from the set. His managers thought it wasn't cool for P to stand up on the top level ramp pointing a gun towards the side of the stage during the song. I have a poster of this that was a centerfold in Soul Magazine where P is pointing a gun. He looks like he would use that motherfucker too. P was crazy as hell back then and I dug it immensely.
