Another 90's 'prince' album (pedantics aside ppl), which aged horribly IMHO.
"Until You're In My arms Again" is a moving song though and "The One" is just awesome, Thank U Rhonda...

It did age badly, but a few of those cuts are great razz

I disagree

It's the "Controversy" of the 1990s...

Mostly fantastic songs; A few clunkers; No real theme or overall concept; Just a good collection of party songs and ballads.

His best of the 1990s.

Umm, NO!! what about Gold, Chaos And Disorder, Love Symbol. these are way better!

cool

Graffiti Bridge is better than any of them . . . .

It's not the shit-fest that it gets credit for. It's lite funk. As an album, it's very consistent, despite using the Emancipation template.

Newpower Soul - Nice breezy melody
Mad Sex - The song "Mad" should have replaced this
Until U're In My Arms Again - Different take on the "Prince" ballad
When U Love Somebody - I like it
Shoo-Bed-Ooh - Not so much
Push It Up - Good
Freaks on This Side - S'OK
Come On - Best track on here (the remixes are great too)
The One - Very good
(I Like) Funky Music - Not great, but not out of place
Wasted Kisses - Wonderful

Mad would have been good. I they both should have been on here.
There isn't a song on this album that I don't like.
I can't imagine it ever being out of my Top Ten favorite Prince albums.(I'd love to see Prince accept the challenge though.)

It's good to listen to once in a while...

Wasted Kisses is superb. The 8 minute-something remix of Come On is great... And the back of my head is in the video (The Cafe De Paris bit).

Erm... no! The problem with GB is the Prince songs sung by other people on it - it would've been a whole lot better if there were no "others" on it.
But Gold is possibly his best ever - a great mix of styles, tunes and everything a Prince album should be - one criticism is that the keyboard is way too loud on Endorphinmachine drowning out the guitar riff - would've been better guitar-rocked up...

'The Symbol Album' is better than 'Gold.'

My first Prince concert was right around the time of New Power Soul. There were many songs he was performing that I had never heard before. I absolutely love this album now.

It's a good party album, almost from start to finish. Prince hasn't been as concerned with getting folks on the dance floor since.

I think it's better when he does it live than on the CD. Same with "Push It Up". The fact that the title is sung by fans at a show is proof it rocks live but kind of doesn't translate on a CD.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

'Mad Sex' is fabulous.

If you just treat the call & response party tunes as segues, you have his best collection of songs in the 1990s.

Mad would fit well. The Good Life was originally meant to be on there too according to the album art and namecheck in the title track.

I agree. Underrated jam. Clever jump piano mixed with funky push/pull beat and perverse lyrics. This song screams of stank butt sweaty naked flesh...in a good way.

"The One" is by far the best track. The vocal performance and arrangement is one of his finest.

I like "Come On" quite a bit, as well as "Wasted Kisses."

The rest seems very disposable to me, especially the title track. "Big Fun" is far far far better, IMHO.

Yeah, I always loved this album. It's Prince playing around with (what was then) the modern R&B sound. I actually think that if this album had been promoted as much as Rave it would have been a success.

Nothing totally earth shattering on here, but you can play the whole thing front to back dancing the whole time.

thank god for Wasted Kisses

Love it razz I was just listening to it last night and really want to know the real deal behind this song eek Is it about Mayte, etc? Without being disrespectful does anyone know?

My interpretation of the song is not about a failed relationship but about the death of his baby.

Overdue, that's how I describe the hour, the minute the moment that I first laid eyes on you...

The first time Prince sees his baby. Think about how much Prince must have wanted kids and think of how agonizing it must have been for him to have to wait 9 months for this moment. Certainly "overdue" could describe the length of time for him to finally be able to lay eyes on his own child for the first time.

I guess I knew, that sooner or later this power, would manifest itself into a rendezvous...

The song is about kisses right? The power he is speaking of is the power of the kiss. Think of the power that a kiss holds. Enough to make two people want to be inside each other. Power enough to lead him and his wife in the DANCE ELECTRIC-sexual union. Kissing...leading to sex...leading to pregnancy...leading to the baby's birth...leading to the moment he first laid eyes on the baby.

Small dark room, that's where I let you smother, in front of your gut torn (lyrics are questionable as to gut torn) mother, why should I care?...

Wasn't Prince's baby on life support at some point? So say that this part of the song Prince is reminiscing of being in the hospital where he and Mayte are faced with making the final decision on whether to keep the little baby alive on machines or let him rest in peace and pull the plug. If the baby's life support system was finally shut off, most likely this would have caused the baby to smother and gasp for final breaths.

Why does he say Gut torn? I think this lyric is Gut Torn and can be taken in two ways. Gut torn--Mayte's gut is torn from having to make this decision on her precious son. Have you never been gut torn over a situation? I'm sure like most of us, you have. OR Gut torn...literally. Having just given birth, her gut is torn from the experience of child birth. I think it would be both at the same time. Also, he says "Why should I care", I take this as him not wanting to care because it is just too much but you can tell by the way he sings the word "CARE" in the song that he really does care.

Cheap perfume all over those burgundy stockings, the ones I tied you up with I should have just left em there...

Perhaps this line is directed at Mayte. Remember how scripted Prince's marriage and the pregnancy were? They got married on Valentines day, that night conceived, 9 months later thay had a baby. What if on the night they conceived, Prince tied Mayte up with those perfumed burgundy stockings? If he had just "left em there", they may not have had the sexual union that led to the conception of their doomed child.

Why did I waste my kisses on you...

Kisses wasted towards their intended purpose.
