It falls in line with the post-modern belief that the author is of no real importance. In post-modernism, interpretation falls solely on the hands of the reader (or in this case, the listener) despite the desires of the author. As a modernist, I feel that the intentions of the author should be taken into account. I have no doubt that Prince had a message he wanted to send with that line and with all lines. That being said, I can't say exactly what it means. However, I do know that 4-leaf clovers have some connotations with good luck. In the lines immediately following it in the song, Prince mentions that he's "not superstitious" and that he doesn't "believe in luck." That being said, the other three symbolize hope, faith and Love. | |
