Ultimate Escape Songs

One of the reasons Prince is a great artist in my eyes is that he is able to create music that is so unlike anything on the radio that it takes you to another place. Another realm. He is blessed in that he can produce funk and pop and also paint fantasies (not just sexual) with music.

I started to get that sense after hearing Around the World in a Day (the production on Condition of the Heart and Paisley Park) but he did it on Parade (I Wonder U, Venus di Milo, Do U lie).

Certain Prince tunes fit into that special category. As a musician you've either got to have nothing to lose or a lot of guts or both to record and release music like that. But I think this is what distinguishes him from being just another pop/rock star.

The Beatles were great at this. (Eleanor Rigby,& the end of All you need is Love and others). Even Maroon 5 with their rendition of that song Pure Imagination from the Willy Wonka movie.

Alot of those 60's songs had that escapist feel to them. (Perhaps inspired by a little cigaweed)

Every now and then I've got to turn the radio off and escape with tunes like that and Prince is great at that.

Parts of The Parade album definitely made you feel like you were in the South of France.

A few other songs with that dreamy quality include:

Old Friends 4 Sale
Alexa de Paris
Dionne
Raspberry Baret
Joy in Repetition
Hallucination Rain
Crystal Ball
The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
Space
Computer Blue

I have a mix that a young cousin of mine enjoys a lot. You wouldn't think a Prince mix, especially with early songs, would be a natural for kids, but there's a lot of playfulness to be found. I'll try and remember a few that I have on there: "Starfish & Coffee" "Raspberry Beret" "Play In the Sunshine" "Paisley Park" "I Wish U Heaven" "Dolphin" "7" "Christopher Tracy's Parade" "Take Me With U" "Mountains"

And some other faves: "When 2 R In Love" "Alexa De Paris" "Venus De Milo"

Also, I know he didn't perform these, but I thought he wrote them: "Icecream Castles in the Summertime" (I believe Morris Day co-wrote this one) "Screams of Passion" and "Desire" (The Family).

Sorry. Lost you when you called Maroon 5 great.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

"I've always been a huge, huge, Prince fan. Studied the guy's music...Even to this day, no one in music to me has captured that sensibility where your mind goes to a different place. It was complex, it was three-dimensional the way he wrote." -Jamie Foxx

It took me a second to figure out your quote bettybop...(I'm slow)

I guess Jamie Foxx feels us.

Most artists stick with the formula. Hook verse hook verse change. Same drum patches and effects and slang terms and images. They play it very safe. Prince is the real deal. He takes chances. He just expresses himself. It's abstract music. One of the main reasons I've listened to Prince all these years.
