Stevie Ray Vaughn once stated that he liked P's playing and that he wanted to tell P that but at an awards show (either 83 Grammy's or 83 AMA's) during a commercial break, Stevie walked over to P to say hello and tell him that he liked his playing. Stevie said that he extended his hand to P to introduce himself and P just kept looking straight ahead, never acknowledging Stevie. This was in Guitar Player magazine from 86 I believe. I know Duff, the bassist from GnR. Velvet Revolver, LOVES Prince and so does Slash although Slash was mad that P snubbed him when he too tried to say hello. So Slash said something to the effect that P dressed like a bitch anyways. I heard that Eddie Van Halen was a longtime P fan and that he has seen P in concert several times. Paul Stanley of KISS has stated a few times that he's a big fan of Prince and likes his guitar playing. He and Gene Simmons both saw P on the Dirty Mind tour in New York in 81 and a few times on the PR tour and the Musicology tour. Lindsey Buckingham also digs P as a guitarist. I saw him arriving at the PR premier (seperate from Stevie Nicks). Nile Rodgers loves P as a guitarist as does P-Funk guitarists Blackbyrd McKnight and Mike Hampton. They both have told me this personally. Both Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield are "admirers" of P's playing. They said this during an interview on VH1. Kendall Jones of Fishbone is also a fan of P's. So was the original guitarists of the Peppers, Hillel Slovak dug P as a guitarist as does John Frosciante. Also Ernie Isley and Neal Schon of Journey. Also Brian May of Queen has said in an interview in Guitar World that he liked Prince as a guitarist.

Keith Richards doesn't like Prince period. biggrin Interested in what Yngwie had to say as to why he doesn't like P. Also the Nelsons, (remember them? The two blonde twins?) I heard say that they met P in a studio once and that P sucked on the guitar. Either that is just a rumor, or they were speaking from a place of jealousy or they were fucked up on crack. Because P has more talent in his pinky finger nail on guitar that both of them put together.

Yeah, the Jump riff is hella similar. Although Eddie didn't take it from P but from Matt Fink being that Matt was the one who wrote the music. But Eddie used to get free Prince albums since they were both on Warners so he definately knew what P sounded like on the axe.

B.G. I thought that most music folks love Prince the musician but some hate his ways i.e. snubs, ect.

I have almost never heard another musican diss Prince outside of Richards and Madonna and Madonna was talking about the movie Prince and not the music.

Do you know if the guys in Living Color tried to hook up with Prince?

That's a good question. I've met Vernon Reid once when I was a member of the Black Rock Coalition and we didn't talk about Prince. I don't know about them actually wanting to work with P or not. The only thing I heard Vernon say in an interview, he mentioned P was coldblooded during the Dirty Mind tour because P was the pimp and the whore. He wore the trench coat = pimp and the panties and heels = whore. biggrin

there's also a glam slam boot with Vernon guesting on stage and prince/band singing something like "oh vernon don't you weep" while he soloed.

Living colour 17 days is typically beefed up and guitar heavy.

An obscure one now from years back. I went to a Sting concert (around 89 maybe) and the program had band profiles - his guitarist talked about how he used to be a jazz player playing big fat 6 string chords and then he heard Prince on the Dirty Mind album and his entire guitar outlook changed to what you can do just playing 2 note chords.

Of course at that moment the credibility of this guy rocketed in my book (but not enough to remember his name 20 years later!) smile

Prince often covers 'Rolling Stones' in concerty so I don't think Richards comments have bothered him. I think Rolling Stones did one 'O2' gig in the middle of Prince's 21 gig run. Prince played a Stones cover the following night to my knowledge.

Of course, opinions are just that .... opinions. However, often a diss says more about the person giving it than the intended target.

Keith Richards always disliked prince, I never understood why. I remember when Mivk Jagger was doing his 80's solo stuff he slagged MJagger off for wanting to be like Prince. He never qualifies what he means-so to me the only explanation can be jealousy for after all he does make a prune look like a baby's bum cheek.

The cover is not that bad, but I like Prince's version so much that others pale in comparison.

Prince's guitar "solos" are a mixed bag for me.

It's his rhythm playing that makes him one of the greatest imo...

Seriously? I don't think I've ever heard a bad Prince solo except for on Purple Rain on the first night in London in 2007.

Lenny Kravitz is a fan of P's guitar playing..(ok, y'all can fire away with that one).

Vernon Reid told me that P invited them out to Paisley Park one night (1990) and they all jammed with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. I wish I had that on tape. He said they had a good time.

Joe Perry said that he's seen many aftershows of P and he said he's the funkiest guitar player on the planet. He said he loves his tone.

Vito Bratta of White Lion has praised him too. Vito said he used to keep a Prince mix tape on his tour bus when they toured back in 1988.

Joe Satriani is huge P fan too. He said that every year he puts out a new LP and has new hairdo and they're both fantastic. Some of the cuts off of "Surfing" (according to him) were influenced by some of P's music.

Jake E. Lee (Ozzy/Badlands) loves P too. He said P always has cool guitar twists and changes in his music that fits.

Phil Collen (Def Lep) is a fan and said he wished P would put out an entire guitar record. He said when he told P that in 88, P played "Red House" onstage and dedicated it to Phil and Steve Clark.

The cats from Exodus, Nuno, Carlos, George Lynch, Richie Kotzen..(who TRIES to rip off P a bit..visually and musically), Steve Stevens, Rocky George, Larry Mitchell, Eric Clapton, and Wyclef have all given P props and respect.

..and f#ck Yngwie. He hasn't put out anything good since 1984. He needs cut out the donuts and find a shirt that covers his belly fat.

Let's talk about the similarity in tones between Mays and Prince's during the mid-1980s and 1990s...

Oh shit, that's right.... I forgot all about Stevie Stevens. I KNEW that too. I wondered if Satriani dug P since I know Vai does. Not surprised by any of these cats listed. Man, u know, P is one of the cats that has always been consistent with killin it on his guitar. Especially live. So he is HELLA respected among so many other professionals and known guitarists. You will find that P is more liked as a guitarist by other known guitarists than not.
