Graffiti Bridge/purple rain sequel I bought it a couple of weeks ago,i thought it was ok,kind of misunderstood
i think they were aiming for 'arthouse' more than hollywood the only mistake i think is that it was called a 'sequel' to purple rain when really it was more 'heavily referenced' because it wasnt really relevant to the storyline much a sequel to purple rain i think would be that the song 'purple rain' would have been his break, seeing as thats how its portrayed in the movie. and i dont know it should have been a movie about him struggling with his record company and trying to stay true to his music or something like that ''now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, a fanatical criminal''

GB should have been him producing Tevin Campbell as a protege. Tevin's mom would be worried about the trappings of fame, based on what she sees in the Kid as short comings. She sees Tevin starting to show slight similarities.
The Time could have been doing the same thing, whereas their protege's mother/father would be more willing to throw their kid to the lion's in trade for fame and fortune, whereas perhaps the child doesn't really WANT to be in the spotlight (a struggle within a struggle). Both scenarios would be a reflection and shadowing of their own up and coming in Purple Rain, with The Kid being more cerebral and personal in his music (Darling Nikki, The Beautiful Ones, Purple Rain), and The Time being all about parties and fun and a tight gang. It would come down to a duel between the two proteges. There should also be a mealy record company executive that is trying to sign either act but lies to both and approaches either very differently, making empty promises (a la Lou Pearlman). It shouldn't be a huge statement on the record industry, but rather the same ideas in Purple Rain of following your heart, and opening up to another influence to gain new perspectives and ideas (like W&L writing PR and it being his saving song at the end of the film). The Kid's father should still be around, but limited because of his injury. The mother is still there for him, despite his constant mean visage, yet she's the one silently in control now. The Kid is reminded of his upbringing every time he sees his parents (who both live in Morris' house, partly out of Morris' guilt over demeaning The Kid's family situation early on). ....and so on.

Would've been better than what we got. I was kind of proud of that pitch. I came up with it on the spot. I do think it would have been a lot more interesting than angels and old ass ambulances.

Hand to God. Eye candy, hmmm. Probably The Time's protege. I think she should be a woman, since Prince's protege is Tevin (and only 2 steps from being a big girl himself, let's keep it real). Not Jill though. Or maybe Tevin's mom would be hot. And there's always a lurking question if Tevin is really The Kid's offspring or not. It's never said, but it's alluded to or put into question. Maybe he doesn't even know, but the mom does of course. Tevin doesn't know either.

I thought this was going to be a thread about a sequel to both PR and GB. I actually think this is doable. Prince could reference the past quite quickly at the beginning and move on to a movie about the ups and downs of fame. Almost in a Star is Born kind of way. I actually think this would get some attention as Prince is now rated as THE live performer. However the problem to all this is GB failed not only coz it was crap but because you couldnt suspend your disbelief. Prince was too famous by this point. PR was corney because he was actually tooo good to be a struggling club act-however due to the lack of (Worldwide) fame it could function as a showcase. If Prince did a sequel to PR and GB that had a superstar playing a superstar it would be more believeable. No way after the music he was doing on PR would he still be pissing about with clubs as he was in GB

Graffiti Bridge was an absolutely horrid, putrid movie. I don't know what was worse the plot, the acting(the woman who played the lead made Apollonia look like Meryl Streep) or the lousy sets. The street scenes looked like West Side Story.
And no the music COULD NOT SAVE IT. Good but no where near Purple Rain or even UTCM. Why did the movie seem so dark? Not the plot, the photography. I actually liked Under The Cherry Moon but G.B ... A mess honey.

How about I'm in Saudi Arabia fighting Operation Desert STorm when the movie is released. Hoping I don't die in combat JUST so I can come home and watch this movie.
Imagine my chigrin when eventually do see this movie. Dying in combat didn't seem like such a bad idea afterwards. I think as prince fans we tend to let Purple guy get away with so much that we wouldn't let ANYONE ELSE get away with just because he's purple guy or because we think he's secretly reading these posts on this site and hoping that if we give him enough accolades he'll email us a purple ticket to Wonka Park Factory or something. Truth is truth and the truth is Prince protected his ego by saying "They didn't get it" when asked about why GB was a flop. See Prince needs to understand No one wants to watch him make Doe eyes and Dove glances and try to be as cute, handsome, whatever he is for an entire 1 and a half. I'm not interested in the new ways he's found to bat his eyelashes. Or the New dance movies he couldn't wait to get on footage however unfitting it is to the purpose of a project. I WANT CONTENT!!!! And if there was a story to be told it Got lost in the bad ass acting, fake-me-out set and meaningless priceisms. Hell, I understood perfectly what GB was about. I've been a Prince fan since 81 and have dissected EVERY lyric of the dude. Hell now I even think like prince because I've been doing this since I was 11. I'm 38 now. I find myself coming up with ideas that he's gonna do BEFORE He does! So I know the dude. Prince tries to hard to be encryptic and wastes too much time with symbology that he himself isn't even familiar with. And if you let him run the camera and let him stick his hands in your wealthy pockets, GB is what you get. When I saw GB i immediate knew the rumors of Prince being a brat were true.

How about this idea for a Purple Rain sequel.....
Prince and Morris Day have hit the big time. They left Minneapolis and they both own competing record companies in Los Angeles.Billy (the owner of First Avenue) gets killed, which brings Prince and Morris back home to Minneapolis for his funeral. It turns out that Billy was killed by the Mob.While in Minneapolis,Prince meets a new, sexy singer whom he falls madly in love with, and wants to bring her back to L.A.,sign her to his label and make her a star.Of course,Morris wants to do the same, lol. They fight over this lady, unaware that she is keeping a secret: she works for the Mob! She's playing a dangerous game with Prince and Morris. Subplot #1: while in Minneapolis,Morris discovers that he has a teenage son.

A mess honey. GB wasn't shot on the street, it was shot in studio like SOTT It worked for SOTT because it was a concert film, GB being shot inside just made it feel so confined, not free and live like PR or UTCM People can say what they want, And I'm all for an artists freedom but I don't think WB tried to do Prince wrong, they knew and understood risks monetarily and commercially that Prince didn't consider Lovesexy: WB believed in it, they believed in the tour, just not so big, and it cost Prince big time WB believed in the Black album they believed in SOTT and wanted Prince to promote it more they believed in GB too they just thought an experienced writer/producer should help out and polish up Princes story line, P didn't want that so we get GB [Edited 8/19/09 8:02am]
