Dream Factory...the story behind the song. Hey y'all. I was listening to the song Dream Factory and was wondering if this song could be about St. Paul quitting THE FAMILY to go solo. Check out the lyrics...especially the lines "Listen 2 the story of a man I am not" and later in the song "A man came up 2 me, smile in his eyes
He told me I was a saint So I'm quittin' my friends much 2 their surprise" Any thoughts? Here's the whole song: This is what it's like in the Dream Factory, oh! Hollyrock ain't all it seems (Lordy) Don't get 2 serious, it's just a dream Don't forget your friends, they're all U've got (Lordy) Listen 2 the story of a man I am not Party all night, hangin' out In the streets more than I be at home I take a pill 2 wipe away my doubts But a pill can't cure my bein' alone Vodka and 7 straight 2 my brain Put me under false impressions, hide all my pain Somebody help me, I'm losing control This is what it's like in the Dream Factory, oh! Everybody got the big dreams (Hey Lordy) But nobody got the bucks Love and trust will help U make it in a world (Everybody) Where there ain't no love, ain't no love Dig... A man came up 2 me, smile in his eyes He told me I was a saint So I'm quittin' my friends much 2 their surprise I can't live up 2 the picture that they paint Ah somebody help me, I'm losing control (Ow!) I guess I'm just a sucker in the dream factory, oh! Lordy La, la, la, la, la (Sucker) Got 2 drive (It's just a dream) {x3} Look out Do U wanna party? Do want a pill? How about a false impression? (Thrills, spills, chills) This is what it's like in the Dream Factory, oh! Ow! Yeah Up a little bit (Dream factory, oh) Party all night, hang up on the side, I said "Uh" (Do U wanna party?) I can't make up my mind (How about a false impression?) I can't seem 2 live with no pictures (Thrills, spills, chills) Somebody got 2 help me! (Just a sucker) I'm losing control (Just a sucker) I guess I'm just a sucker in the dream factory, oh! Guess I'm just a sucker in the dream factory, oh! (Just a sucker, motherfucker!) He told me I was a saint So I'm quittin' my friends much 2 their surprise" Any thoughts? It's no real secret that it's about Paul, abruptly leaving The Family just on the cusp of their success. That's why there was only one gig too. Prince was none too pleased when it all happened. Read the liner note to this song in the CB book.

The lyric line quoted earlier is flat out a reference to him, "he told me I was a SAINT, so I'm quitting my friends..." Even Paul knows it's about him. He's said as much.

"Hollyrock" was written for Paul originally, wasn't it? (In reference to the opening lyric.)

No, I not saying it's not about Paul, I know it's about Paul Just saying I heard him call out Jesse's name during this rehearsal the song was Mutiny with the Revolution and they added in the verse "This is what it's like in the Dream Factory woe oh" ... sorry I just relistened and its in MUTINY the Work Vol1 Disc 4 where he calls out Jesse about 2:00 min into the song

I never knew this song was about St.Paul. Hey, live and learn. Definitely a hot track. I always liked when they name checked a member of the family on a track (i.e. Love On A Blue Train "Jerome upside ya' head, Mazarati upside ya head") When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Yep. The rap is from the Family out-take 'Feline'.

Yep. The rap is from the Family out-take 'Feline'. Paul has also sung that rap from "Hollyrock" with a six string acoustic in hand and with a country twang in his voice. He's done it twice on the live video Q&A sessions he's done with Susannah and the fans. It's hysterical.

I never understood why though. Jerome was with him until about that time (when the song would have been written probably, or roughly there abouts). Not sure if it was a fun name check or something worse.

Actually this song and album came out/was written during the ATWIAD/Parade era which is why there is a nodd 2 Mazarati and Jerome 4 all we know they were jammin with Sheila on this during the recording or just in creation of the song This album has more of that Parade era feel to it similar 2 the Family and Jill Jones Mia Bocca

The song has a very fun feel though. It's one of those great record ending songs. The extended mix is pretty cool too. I don't have my DMSR book, so I can't look up when it was actually recorded.

I'd consider it more a shout out than a diss. I don't have books at hand either at the mo', but I remember 'Love On A Blue Train' is on the 1986 Japanese dance EP, which has a Romance 1600 era cover - so it's one of the earlier tracks from that LP, along with 'Hold Me' (not a Prince track I know), which was the b-side to Holly Rock too in it's slightly longer 'Touch Me' form. Incidently, there's a couple of Japanese TV commercials on YouTube, advertising VCRs, that use studio performance footage of these two tracks, hadn't seen them until recently - can't believe they never used them as the promo videos - The 'Hold Me' one is shot on the same shoot as the Holly Rock cover which I always thought was an 'homage' to the scene in Ghostbusters on the roof. Edit: Covers I'm talking about: [Edited 8/17/09 23:53pm]

Edit: Covers I'm talking about: [Edited 8/17/09 23:53pm] Yeah, the video footage for "Love on a Blue Train" is definitely Sheila in Romance 1600 outfits and with the hair from that era. I agree that the Jerome and Mazarati shoutouts sound friendly. There's also a video out of Sheila playing a club with Mazarati; I think they had a friendly Paisley vibe going on that was being celebrated in the song--which is, by the way, one of my favorites of hers and one I would love to see her play live some day (hope springs eternal).
