''Purple Awakening''

Why ive recently got into Prince more:

Ive always been a prince fan
since a small kid
when my brother would have his apartment covered in merch
but i dont think i had a ''purple awakening'' until MJ died and i realized that i shouldnt take prince for granted
i started off by searching princes catalog and then checked out his videos more, ive found alot of songs and i guess im feeling what alot of you felt in the 80's when these songs first came out

do any of you find youve been listening to purple boy alot more since the passing of Mj?

Interesting thread!

It gives me an excuse to tell my story:
I was a fan as a teenager, as soon as I noticed Purple Rain album and movie. But it was the dark ages in Greece back then... No internet, no music TV channels, not even decent radio or magazines! Information was really scarce. I had to write a letter to a mag to ask them what was Prince's discography. Luckily two other fans read my letter and contacted me, they even supplied me with copies of "1999", "Controversy" and "Dirty mind" albums which I couldn't find in stores. The following years I bought the albums up to "Batman" (cassettes, I didn't even have a record player). I also remember having contacted some fanzine thing in London.

At the end of the '80s I gradually stopped listening to international music and focused on greek only. So I lost touch with everything.

And then, a few months ago this year a curious thing happened... A friend of mine uploaded on youtube some videos of her favourite greek band performing live at a club. She told me a while later that youtube had warned her that she should delete ONE of them or else her account would be suspended. She couldn't understand what was the problem with that particular video, since she had uploaded loads of other stuff with no problem. In that video the band was playing Purple Rain... After a little research she told me that apparently Prince didn't like youtube and didn't allow any of his music on there, which I found really absurd! I said "How's that possible? I remember a few years back the man was giving his music for free, it was on the news!" So I became intrigued and started my own little research. I read articles and luckily found some videoclips in other sites, which brought back so many memories... It was indeed GREAT music that I had left behind! But I left it at that.

Two months later Michael Jackson dies. I resented everything about the guy so I didn't pay any attention. But from then on all of the greek media started bombarding us with MJ! Every day, morning noon and night, on every channel, on every show, you would bump into MJ, there was no escape! I was SO pissed off! And they were saying such hymns about how great he was, how unique, etc, and I was like: "WTF are they talking about! As far as I remember it was actually PRINCE who was unique, extraordinary, innovative and vastly influential to the music scene!!!"

So I ended up here. smile
It was the combination of the two aforementioned events that brought me back into purple fandom (or famdom as I hear). The universe conspired to it! razz
I was SO GLAD Prince was still in the business!
Now I'm re-discovering him. And trying to catch up to 20 years of discography completely unknown to me. It's not easy, but I'll take my time... I want to chew and digest everything so I won't rush it. I'm watching you all talking about dozens and dozens of songs I have no clue about and I'm really jealous. I hope and pray that he will sometime hold a concert here so I can have the pleasure of watching him live (financial situation doesn't allow travelling at the moment, not even within Europe).
May eye live 2 C the dawn!
Amen.

I listen to Prince's music as I always have...when I am inspired to listen...Sometimes the radio or music by other artist's is the way I feel.

At times I avoid listening 2 Prince as it can help me miss him. cool

I had mine the first time I saw him live, wich was the Super Bowl performance. My face was serisouly like eek through the whole thing hahah

I had no idea who the heck that little man with mad guitar skills was, but my mother sure did!

Purple Rain really touched me through that performance and became my only favorite song of his. I knew he was capable of some serious love songs, but I was afraid to venture out and see what his catalog looked like. You know some artists where you end up just liking one song of theirs? I thought Prince would be one of those

But boy was I wrong, few years later when I was yet still an early teen I came across Let's Go Crazy. As a guitarrist, I found that song insanely wicked. Then Kiss then When Doves Cry then Cream then .. well geez it was a snowball effect.

AGREED. When everyone on the news was talking about how much of a "musical genius" MJ was, I just thought of Prince. I prefer Prince. smile

No.

Yeah, me neither--I've always listened to Prince. But then again, that's why I stay on prince.org.

I was listening to a great Prince mix the other day and I tell ya, his songs are like little gems. He just creates a world all his own in with his music.

This is an interesting thread. I figured some would be more appreciative of him given the circumstances. I think it's sweet....bittersweet, perhaps, but sweet nonetheless.
