Have there ever been a ORG WIDE "REDO A PRINCE SONG" competition?

would be fun....

nice twist would be there would be two drawings.

the first would be the song they would have to do.

the second would be they would have to do the song in the style of ANOTHER prince song.

get it?

PROLLY NOT.

had a dream thought it would be a cool idea.

how much do you think we would get sued for doing this?

p.s. this is my first thread on this side since mj died so please be nice! eek

*****UPDATE*****

OKAY OKAY OKAY...how bout you do a NON prince song in the style OF a prince song?

You decide the song. then there has to be a "pull it out of a hat" type way to choose which prince song you are going to use as a style. what yall think?

I LOVE this idea.

Except it might be a bit limiting 2 have one dictated song only, not by choice.

As 4 part 2... U could say, "In a Prince-like style, but not the original style... not a copy."

I'm game 4 this.

Anyone else?

yea i know. i was trying to think of how people get which songs.

i know they shouldnt pick it themselves...that would take alot of the fun out of it.

if they dont like it they can draw for another choice....how that will be done i have no idea.

did i make myself clear about the second part?

like sing RASPBERRY BERET but do it in the musical style of LITTLE RED CORVETTE ( can you hear it?)

or TAMBOURINE in the style of ROCK HARD IN A FUNKY PLACE

etc....

SERIOUSly...prince gon' sue us! lol

ummmmm

not sure about this one

do a P song-mabey.....i've only ever recorded one cover-a Specials song-doing a P song would be a real big deal

but though I understand your second point-to me its a bit crazy-and confused-it's like-do something cool-then purposely mess it up-thats a little wierd.....

and-you mention suing a little too much for my liking wink

so who wants to spear head this. i think of great ideas. actually carrying it out is another issue lol lol lol

i guess we need to wait for a few more people to "sign up" i guess...

and how long do you think these people would need after the song is chosen? 2 weeks?

OK OK I GOT IT!

now maybe doing a whole prince song in the style of another prince song may be too much for some people.

( YALL KNOW- like a mash up)

so how about they can still do the song like the original, but at least incorporate SOMETHING from another appointed Prince song. be it a line taken from lyrics, or a synth line, or the drum beat , etc.

i guess part of deciphering who wins is thsoe who can be more creative with incorperating and mixing the two together.

yamean? cool

Are U talking about mixing 2 tracks 2gether like a DJ would or recording U're own version? Cuz I play guitar not vinyl. smile

I think it's a cool idea but I'm not sure about having a criteria, why limit peoples creativity? Why not just say cover any Prince tune U want in any style U want but make it sound different 2 the original? See who does what with what.

If U do it that way then I'm in. smile

Just 2 expand/clarify...

U should give a few options 4 which song... if U limit it, then limit it 2 an era. The song should be done in a different style, but incorporate Prince-like elements. The remake shouldn't be a copy of the vocals or music style in the original.

You'd come up with a lot more creativity if U kept it more open and flexible.

IN FACT, maybe it should be just 2 pick any song U want, keep it somewhat Princely, but without copying the vox and music.

I actually tried something like this last year, a sort of Prince vs Bowie mashup, where I tried to meld at least 3 songs by each artist into one 'song'. But it was more of an elaborate cover project than a mashup, becuase I replayed all the instruments myself. I actually found that there were some harmonic similarites I could work off, so I was able to blend Vicki Waiting with Golden Years, Cream with Fame, and DJ with Eye am the DJ (of course!). The best bit came along when I was noodling along with pop life and realised Ashes to Ashes fit perfectly with it! Ive got 3 prince vs bowie tracks, orgnote me if youd be interested in me posting a link!

Well... I think keeping it simple would be better.

People should pick the songs they want to do.

And there should be judging categories like 'most creative', best over-all, most 'prince like',

I also vote that Anxiety be one of the judges.

And I'm in, it's on!

Oh yes, I'm in too!

Maybe we should have a pool of songs we can choose from.

Maybe we can do it like this:

All contestants pick a song for the pool.
Then in the end there are as many songs in the pool as there are contestants.

Now every contestant has to pick a song, yet he CAN'T pick the song he put there himself.

Wouldn't that be fun?

Nice idea, but I think you guys are in way over your heads in this one. I'd contact his lawyers, your lawyers, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and your next of kin first. That being said, if permission is granted (not likely) I'd love to participate.
I'm just saying...

Man, if it's not a money making venture, you don't need permission. There's something in the law called "fair use".
