The Rainbow Children VS Lotusflow3r Arguably, the two strongest musical contributions from the decade by Prince. Which do you feel is the better album - musically, lyrically, imaginatevly, whatever?

urgh. that is a very tough one. i don't think i can pick one. i'd have to
sit down and listen to both of them back to back and perhaps that would be enough to give one a slight edge over the other. i agree with you though that they are the two strongest albums prince has released this decade. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

You're right about that-it is arguable. I'd argue to say that both of those albums suck in a big way. But that being said, musically, TRC (as much as I hate that album) is superior musically. I just wish it wasn't so damn preachy.

Lotusflow3r is like a parody of a genuine, good album. If it has its own personality, I've yet to discover it. TRC on the other hand is Prince's best work in the last 20 years. "this especially prepared potato is called pomme de terre"

BBBWWHHAHAHAHAHAA, or not! TRC is racist, religious propaganda, and Lotus is a bizarre yet futile attempt to reclaim his guitar/80's roots. Chaos and Gold Experience are much better examples of Prince's guitar playing abilities. Which do you feel is the better album - musically, lyrically, imaginatevly, whatever?

Ok...Ive heard people praising TRC, but I gotta tell ya... I dont get it. It was, in my opinion, the most unbearable album he's ever released. 1+1+1 is 3 and everlasting now were the only things half way enjoyable. For that to be the first album after changing his name back to Prince was a HUGE disappointment. And then he slaps a sticker stating "The contraversial new album from Prince".. that was ridiculous. The only thing contraversial about it was how in the world he thought it was good enough to release. People say it was contraversial because of all the religious babble... Umm... excuse me, but this is PRINCE we're talking about. The guy who wore BUTT OUT pants on live TV, the guy who was the main cause of Parental Advisory labels, the guy who put a reference to the return of christ backwards at the end of Darling Nikki, the guy who recorded songs like Jack U Off, P Control and Head.. Trust me Prince..TRC WAS NOT Contraversial!
Lotus shouldnt have been 3 cds. Its hould have been one and completely excluded Bria. She should have been a completely seperate business venture. But regardless, Lotus completely smokes TRC!

I would respectfully disagree, by stating emphatically that they R INARGUABLY the 2 strongest musical offerings by Prince within more than a decade. They R like 2 beautiful children from the same parents... with different voices, but each within its' own theme. . [Edited 8/12/09 11:28am] "He's a musician's musician..."

Pass. OK, I won't address the 'Rainbow Children' comment, though I really don't see it that way... How can U possibly think that 'The Gold Experience' has better guitar than 'Lotusflow3r'?? His tone on 'Lotusflow3r' is the best distorted tone he's used... not 2 glossy... lots of tube driven '60s-'70s tone. His playing is impeccable, raw, explosive, and musical. . Gold Experience is a full on rock album, balls to the wall type thing. I don't care what effect he's using on a guitar. That doesn't make an album, a song, or a musician great. Lotus is just ....well, annoying as all fuckery. And listen Gio, I've tried to listen to the album more than a couple of times. MPLSound too. I even went back a few months ago and listened to TRC again. TRC makes my skin crawl. It ain't rap music that incites people to violence, it's TRC for me. haha Lotus is just another load of crap. Yes, I get that people like it, it's AMAZING, it's WONDERFUL, it's THE BEST YET, they all say. Well, it's not AMAZING. Amazing is overused, and something REALLY has to be special in so many ways to be called AMAZING. Lotus is not that at all. Neither is Mplsound. As much as I've tired to listen to Lotus and/or Mpls, I can't remember one song off of it. I remember the days when I could recite every lyric, every liner note, every track list, every TIME on a track, but now, it's just eh....who cares. I opened the Musicology CD the other day to look inside, and felt like I'd never seen it before. Same with TRC. I just don't connect with those CDs. I'm not sure what it is about Prince in the 00's, but his music is suffering greatly. And so are his fans, like me. The 80's were spectacular for Prince. The 90's were an incredible time of growth and maturing, right on through NPS and Rave for me. But the 00's have been more than disappointing. More bad than good. We agree to disagree. That is what makes it all copacetic. To each his own.

To me its Lotusflow3r by a mile.
I cannot stand anything about TRC, I found it insulting on so many levels, and musically to me its just a lame parody of 70's fussion.

i listened to The Rainbow Children for the first time recently. i wanted to love it because of the jazziness & critical praise, but i couldn't get into it. overall it was just OK. i think if it was an instrumental album, i'd love it. it may take some time for me to fully appreciate it.
Lotusflow3r was Prince going back to guitar-driven, rock songs. i liked it. he didn't do anything that was out-of-the-box musically. it's good, not great. Musically (sonically): TRC is better. Lyrically: i like Lotusflow3r more. How can I stand 2 stay where I am? / Poor butterfly who don't understand.

TRC is controversial because that is what Prince wanted to make it.
The album was released and distributed by the Prince mom & dad outfit, so he was prolly putting those stickers on himself. People often say TRC is a religious or preachy album, yet it is not a celebration of spiritual enlightenment, at all, instead it emphasizes the dogmatic aspects of a strictly organized religion and portrays them as eerily deliberate. This is not the Prince that sang Anna Stesia and Positivity, this Prince is controlling, manipulative and close minded. Either TRC provides a unique insight into Prince's psyche (at the time), or he brilliantly channels a fabricated controversial persona. Or both. i think TRC is a much more focused, intentional, planned-out project than LF.
LF reminds me more of an album like SOTT, which was the end result of a lot of projects that started and got axed, or ran into dead ends, or just didn't have anywhere to go, so the best bits were cobbled into an album and the rough parts were smoothed out brilliantly. TRC feels like everything on there was created FOR that album. which is "better"? i dunno. i think TRC is more impressive.
