good fair review !

i always compare "musicology" to "3121" - they both i believe got 4 stars by Rolling Stone - - - however - i KNOW I ENJOYED 3121 more ...

Musicology to me sounds so "retro" and mixed up ...

to me 3121 sounds more like Prince is having sum fun ...

that being said - it still bothers me - that line "wall of berlin " .... isnt it the Berlin wall ??? neutral
Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

I don't understand the question. Do you mean the Berlin wall is called "The Berlin Wall" only? I thought the Wall of Berlin was fine too. boxed

I just listened to this album too! It's a very strong sequence. And the title track is in my top eschelon of Prince tracks.

Also.... a lot of Lotusflo3r/MPLSsound (is that what its called?) must might have the same sessions

and on a sidenote....

Pheremone and The Pope are from the same elements in part. Just noticed that.

The title track is not in my top echelon, it's the only song on the album I don't care for.
I like the album more than Lovesexy though. Listened to Lovesexy today (and the Tokyo Lovesexy show . . . )
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Yes I like 'Get On the Boat.' It sounds like what 'It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night,' was supposed to sound like.

Very good review although I myself thought that Love should have been a single and love the disc.

The song white folks were born to love comes next: Fury. My god, this a great song. It’s Hendrix. It’s Bob Seagur. It’s Lenny Kravitz—all rolled into one. It was the perfect single, but sadly failed to capture an audience. The only qualm I have with the song is that the studio version isn’t nearly as edgy or fierce as his Saturday Night Live performance of the song—if he had given it the treatment he gave ‘Dreamer’ from lotusflow3r it would have rocked my socks off. That being said, the toned down studio version probably fit better into 3121 as it was.

Very solid and dead-on review...

Wait, are we being punked!?! Tomorrow, will you reveal that you just wanted to see how many fools would "sign on" to your review of this horrible record? LOL.

But, seriously, you capture very well the notion that a lot of times Prince is given a neqative critique for creating solid or good music rather than creating excellent music. And the line, "The song white folks were born to love comes next: Fury," is too funny. I guess I'll side with the white folks this time 'cause I love "Fury" also?

I loved your discriptions of the songs and thought they were spot on mostly nod hug

We only differ in that we don't agree on all the songs---but that's the beauty of Prince, isn't it? There's something for everyone to like.

I wasn't being harsh against my white brothers and sisters about Fury but it is rock in the most classic sense. lol

One of my favorite Prince performances is the version of the song he did on SNL.

I agree with M-Funq... wink

3121 is yet another very average album, 1 of his worst albums actually, I can't enjoy it... only a few good tracks,

the LF / MPLS albums are far better. biggrin

Very nicely done review OP, thanks.

I took only 4 songs from 3121 for my ipod. The title track is just too rappy & R&B for me. I don't like rap, no matter who does it.I really need melody in my music to move me.

Naturally I took Incense and Candles, The Dance, Te amo corazon & Beautiful loved and Blessed.

I re-listened to the Word, to see why I had skipped it. The beginning guitar is funky and a few later sound effects of the vocals, but it doesn't grab me this song.I had therefore not really listened to the lyrics. At the end it gets all rocky wild with the guitar as well which I can tolerate in small doses if an entire song has kept me listening to that part.

I'm white but The Fury doesn't grab me at all. The song beginning reminds me of another song. Which one I don't know.

Not Prince's best album, but I suppose it was a specific sound for a specific group of listeners.

Just goes to show that 'one man's gloom is another man's glory', as they're the songs on that album that I can't listen to.
