It wouldn't be the end of the world if he did have a collaborative producer. We know he can do it all, but different people bring different things to the table.

I agree with this.We all know that he's capable of producing himself, but it wouldn't hurt to bring in some new inspiration and a fresh approach, which he could only get from another creative producer.

That would be all fine and good if this were still the 70s or 80s but just look at what's out today. The last thing I want to hear from Prince or anyone else, is some bullshit that's like today's music. I don't want no shit hop and I also don't want an album full of nothing but slow to midtempo songs either.

Hell no to most of the above ideas.
Prince should work with me because:

a) I'm a fairly unknown as a producer and no one would expect it.

b) Fresh blood, fresh ear.

c) I'd kick his ass and tell him to f* off when he turns into an upstart in the studio. He needs a strict set of ears with pop/formula who understands what he's capable of, who won't let him rest on his laurels and challenge him to grow.

d) No collabs with Alicia Keys or anyone else who might water him down.
- No offense Alicia, you have some super bad jams!

e) My Grandfather helped birth Top 40 as a radio and network format. I grew up learning the "ear" and the music business on ALL SIDES.

f) I make (or like to go for) mean pancakes after recording sessions.

g) I won't treat him like a celebrity, because it's a frikking sham.
-It's who you are, what you've been through and what's in your heart that count, then how that can translate into music.

Get me a good engineer, a bitching guitar tech and we'll jump ship to Madison. No Paisley allowed for the next one (except for over dubs, post production etc), you need a change!

It would be hard to make Prince do any of this:

(metaphor)
You're asking the head chef at an established avante-garde restaurant that is now been around for years, to be treated as a regular cook, work in another kitchen outside of his custom built one, and work with new waitstaff, with the assurance that you know food trends, without having pioneered a single cultural food trend yourself... even though this old chef knows how to make as much (and more) money for himself now as he ever made back in the day through new means within a changed system...

You'd have to $$$ pay Prince a lot! He'd do it for 2 million before costs. I think.

I think he's gotten some of his old production skills and original vision in that regard back though. Around the time of NPS / Rave he was pretty lost - and that was when he was indeed collaborating with an associate producer, Kirky J.

I'd reintroduce him to his old synths myself, get him an Oberheim and force him to work with that. Narrow down the dynamics a bit to remind more of his 80s output, because that just worked for his type of material. He could litter the songs with as many pseudo-religious references as he'd want, I wouldn't care.

hmmm... I'd say Mad Sex, The One, Come On, Prettyman, I Love U, But I Don't Trust U are better formed songs with better, creative production and musical flavors than many others are capable of!

Yeah Come on is great song, nice production
Prince wasn't a good producer when he wanted to sound Hip
Prince regained back his muse when he
realised people like him for his Prince sound that is unique.
orger with cheef of Restoraunt said it the best:

Does anyone expect the man, who as an unknown, unsigned 17-year-old kid would rather not have a record deal than let anyone else (including Maurice and Verdine White, members of one of the hottest bands at the time) produce an album for him to at this stage of his legendary career let someone else produce him? eek

Yeah, well. He still had his talent and was obviously capable of pulling off a good song - it's just that I don't feel he was grounded on anything really during that time.

I'd replace the drums on Mad Sex with something else though (with most anything else to be honest). wink

I guess it depends on what he wants to accomplish with the cd.

If its to update his sound, get some radio air play and have a cd stick around in the top 10 for longer then a week or two, yes, yes, yes....Andrea 3000, Black Eyed Peas, etc... please help.

If it to do the same 'ol same 'ol then no...

I would be interested to hear what another producer could do with a prince album, what fresh ideas would come from it, any new directions etc.

Yes he should, because as great and different as he is, and as much as he's put out a huge amount a material that is quite different from alot of stuff he's put out, he's copied himself so much over the years that no matter what he comes out with, it still sounds like Prince. It's been only a few times where he really tricked me, but other than that, Prince sounds like Prince, wether it's DM or Comes, or 1999 or Gold or The Rainbow Children or Planet Earth or Batman, it all sounds different in the same sound, if that made any since.

He needs someone else that has nothing to do with his sound. Will-I-Am or Stevie Wonder or just some who has nothing to do with the Minniwood sound.

When I wanna hear a Will-I-Am record, I will pick up a Will-I-Am record. When I pick up a Prince record, I most definitely wanna hear a Prince record!
