ACT I, II, II TOUR(S) ??? Could somebody explain please? Back in the day and without the internet being so massive, I was not aware this tour (or these tours) had happened. Could somebody please explain what exactly this was? I keep hearing Act I Tour this and the Act II Tour that as if there were separate tours. Then in a book the other day I read that the name of the tour was the O+> and that the concert had 3 segments within: Acts I, II and III. I didn't even know there was a III!?! SO... I'm confused. Was it one show with 3 parts. Or was it 3 different tours done separately around the same era.
Any help, thank you!! | |

There was never an Act III tour AFAIK Act I was the US tour and Act II was the European tour.

Act I was the USA tour on the back of the album.
Act II was the European tour, but by this point it was being billed more of a greatest hits tour because this was the start of the name change stuff, so it was billed as the last time you could see him do the Prince material. IIRC, members of the Controversy (official) magazine at the time were polled for songs to perform on the tour. Also, IIRC, Act III was the Japanese leg of this tour that never happened. . Yes, the "Act I" tour was in support of the album and was split into
2 halves (much like the Lovesexy tour). The first half was almost a musical dramatization of the album, While the second half was more of a greatest hits show. The "Act I" tour was a US only tour. A typical "Act I" show looked something like this... Part 1: My Name is Prince Sexy M.F. Love 2 the 9's Damn U The Max The Morning Papers Peach Blue Light The Continental Everybody Get On Up The Flow Johnny Eye Wanna Melt With U Sweet Baby And God Created Woman 3 Chains O' Gold 7 Part 2: Let's Go Crazy Kiss Irresistible Bitch She's Always in My Hair Insatiable Scandalous Gett Off Goldnigga Purple Rain Partyman 1999 Baby I'm a Star Push The "Act II" tour was a European tour and was more of a 'Greatest Hits' show, and wasn't separated into two parts like the "Act I" tour was. Though it did feature songs from the album, they weren't presented in the same dramatized way as on the US tour. A typical "Act II" show looked something like this... My Name is Prince Sexy M.F. Love 2 the 9's The Beautiful Ones Let's Go Crazy Kiss Irresistible Bitch She's Always in My Hair Raspberry Beret Sometimes it Snows in April The Cross Sign O' the Times Purple Rain Thunder When Doves Cry Nothing Compares 2 U And God Created Woman Diamonds and Pearls Little Red Corvette Strollin' Scandalous Girls & Boys 7 1999 Baby I'm a Star America There was an "Act III" tour planned, which was going to be the Japanese leg, but this never materialized in the end.

And on a side note, the "Act II" shows had one of Prince's most inspired
Opening gags/shock moments... The Show would open with "My Name Is Prince", with what appeared to be Prince complete with Chain-hat, gun-mike and cane singing the song. At the end of the song 'Prince' ripped open the chest of 'his' coat to reveal... a pair of breasts in a bright pink bikini top! The chain-hat was then thrown away to reveal that it had been Mayte all along, miming to the whole song! While Prince had been singing it live off stage all the time. Prince now casually walked onto the stage as "Sexy M.F." started up and Mayte finished discarding her disguise. It was a classic moment, you should have seen the look of surprise and confusion on people's faces when "Prince" flashed 'his' bikini-clad boobs at the crowd!

Saw the Act II Show in Germany as part of a festival called "Rock oder Germany" in 1993. It was a great show! The New Power Generation were the opening act, by the way. They played the Gold Nigger Album. I´m not sure if Prince joined them for vocals on "Johnny", could be. See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...

I remember the Brabanthallen concert in 's-Hertogenbosch, Holland, them* arriving on stage on a sort of flying carpet (borrowed from the nearby Efteling ) some sort of a cable cart. It flew from the back of the hall, or from halfway or soundboard, towards the stage. * I can not remeber clearly if that was only Mayte.
