The best thing about this song is that it was a collaboration between Prince and his father. Good stuff!

It's about Prince needing to fix a roof but his shed had been broken into. His ladder had been stolen along with all his garden tools, so he had to go knocking on his neighbours doors, to see if he could borrow a ladder. Unfortunately, they had all suffered at the hands of the thieves and everyone was looking for a ladder. sad

This incident hit Prince hard, it was also an inspiration for the song Loose, which was written after he found the thief and got revenge by robbing their shed.

Sorry that some people on here are 2 fucking rude to give u a straight answer and spend more time taking the piss shoot3 but the song is set simple and explains itself. i do have have 2 say u need 2 speed up on grasping the songs cause prince as never been main stream about explanations that is what makes him unique.

lol @ this thread. I'll take this one if you want.

The song is symbolic but as others have said fairly simple to decipher (of course we may be wrong and Prince might really know of a faraway land called Sinaplenty and subject called Electra - she might even be a hoochie dancer hmmm )

It's basically about the yearning for or finally reaching a higher consciousness/spiritual enlightenment after experiencing life's journey. it explains you have to put in a bit of effort, not give in to sin or temptation, but you will be rewarded in the end. biggrin cool

It's about 12 feet tall, and is used to climb up buildings. Need to use caution when using a Ladder.

It is interesting that you interpret as claiming that you can't give in to sin or temptation. The song following The Ladder on the album is Temptation, where he basically sings about how great it is to give in to temptations.

Great picture, I've never seen this...

The ascension into Heaven is gradual. I have always looked at life like a stairway. One adversity is delivered to you to overcome and step on. As soon as you are solid on one stair, another adversity is delivered to you. It is in our tribulations that our spiritual character is defined...not in our peaches and cream days. cool

You could say that in the song, The Ladder is the final part of the journey, the link between this life and the next. I don't think it's literally a ladder although TheEnglishGent does make a compelling point about that theft.

Very true. I can't remember the last time I listened to the entire track; at least 6 years. I love the song, but I always stop it once the main part is over.
