Stevie Ray Vaughn once stated that he liked P's playing and that he wanted to tell P that but at an awards show (either 83 Grammy's or 83 AMA's) during a commercial break, Stevie walked over to P to say hello and tell him that he liked his playing. Stevie said that he extended his hand to P to introduce himself and P just kept looking straight ahead, never acknowledging Stevie. This was in Guitar Player magazine from 86 I believe. I know Duff, the bassists from GnR. Velvet Revolver LOVES Prince and so does Slash although Slash was mad that P snubbed him when he too tried to say hello. So Slash said something to the effect that P dressed like a bitch anyways. I heard that Eddie Van Halen was a longtime P fan and that he has seen P in concert several times. Paul Stanley of KISS has stated a few times that he's a big fan of Prince and likes his guitar playing. He and Gene Simmons both saw P on the Dirty Mind tour in New York in 81 and a few times on the PR tour and the Musicology tour. Lindsey Buckingham also digs P as a guitarist. I saw him arriving at the PR premier (seperate from Stevie Nicks). Nile Rodgers loves P as a guitarist as does P-Funk guitarists Blackbyrd McKnight and Mike Hampton. They both have told me this personally. Both Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield are "admirers" of P's playing. They said this during an interview on VH1. Kendall Jones of Fishbone is also a fan of P's. So was the original guitarists of the Peppers, Hillel Slovak dug P as a guitarist as does John Frosciante. Also Ernie Isley and Neal Schon of Journey. Also Brian May of Queen has said in an interview in Guitar World that he liked Prince as a guitarist.

Nah, this was when P and GnR were at Rio for a rock festival in the early 90's.

Oh, I love Queen. biggrin

And Brian May is a great guitar player himself. biggrin

Brian May is one of my all-time favorites. I have a bootleg of Freddie Mercury songs without Queen, and I can tell you that Brian May's guitar work made Queen the band it was. Freddie is very likely the best vocalist ever, but only with May behind him.

By the way, Blackguitaristz you have an amazing memory! Liked your posts here. nod

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I remember in Rolling Stone that Slash said he "hated" P. It took place at one of the MTV award shows they were both at.

He said after Guns came offstage Lenny Kravitz walked away from P and congratulated Guns on their performance. He then said when Guns walked past P and his band, P gave them this look of disgust. Slash said he wanted to kick his ass right there. He also called him a "little f@ggot".

Maybe P had a problem with Axl n***gers and f@ggot comments in one of GnR songs. I know the guys in Living Colour called him out on that.

Wasn't this when Slash was falling down drunk at the AMAs

It was at the AMAs. Prince received a lifetime achievement award or something?

It was during his batman period.

He accepted the award wearing some strange black outfit with what looked like a deck of cards sewed into the collar, and his very long hair was pulled back. It was a very campy Paul Revere kind of look.

Slash mentioned that he was talking to Lenny Kravitz (who was also at the ceremonies) back stage and really got on with Lenny.
Then he said, "but Prince blew me off." or something to that affect and that Prince was surrounded by his 'entourage'. Then he concluded that "he looked like a fag anyway."

Well he's not a guitarrist but he's ledgendary- Axl Rose talked to him at an awards show and they discussed how the age 28 is the hardest.

Axl seemed pretty boastful when he mentioned the name "Prince" smile hahah, saw it on a youtube clip.

Wierd he dissed Slash and Stevie though, never knew they were fans.

Geez you imagine being dissed by a ledgend you look up to for no apperant reason, while your drunk. Slash's reaction was only normal. Lay off the dude- it wasn't polite for Prince to do that anyways

I've found over the years that the professional people who don't like Prince, it stems from something personal than from the musicanship.

Considering Dick Clark suspended Slash from ever attending those awards for years, not well.

He was a blood thirsty young rock star for heaven's sake, not Ghandi. I'm sure Prince would of understood... er then again, maybe not.

Other guitar players that have mentioned they love/like P:

Jack White
Charly Garcia (Argentina's biggest music star)
Fito Paez (considered by critics the argentinian Prince)
The Edge
Tom Morello
Mario Martínez (guitarist from Spain rock legend band La Union)
Richie Sambora
Beck

Slash had more class than the average drunk, you try to name one person who could nail every single note through a 2 hour setlist with 8 gallons of vodka running through your viens, without collapsing.

I wasn't hip to any of this at the AMA's. I do know about when P and GnR were both at the Rock In Rio concert and Slash tried to speak to P but P obviously thought Slash was The Invisible Man and shit and walked right past him. Slash later commented that P "dressed like a bitch".

Nah, cuz no one can say that. U wanna know why? Because every guitarist in the biz doesn't dig P as a guitarist. It's been stated on here by me as well as others what guitarists don't like P. I mean, THAT is what the thread by banishedone is about. What guitarists digs and who disses P as a guitarist. To me, at least this thread is musically oriented and not about how high is P's heels and shit....So nah, we can't say that everybody loves P's skills. I know what I personally do when I come across a thread that is hella boring.....I split. I certainly don't post. I mean, really dawg...what's the TRUE point in that?

I'd kinda like to know what Peter Frampton thinks of Prince, and vice versa.

For all his talents, Prince might have a hard time keeping up with Frampton on guitar - he's just too damn good. And he had great hair in the 70s..

It has to be P's persona that some guitarists don't dig...not his skills. Shit he's awesome. I mean what is a bad guitar player anyway? Someone who is off key, misplaces their pick and holds their guitar awkwardly thus affecting their playing, redundancy, unfamiliar with the various types of guitars and styles, limited in their presentation? Definitely not P.

Yes, he was kicked off of the AMA for cussing and yelling into mike when GNR went to pick up their award. Despite all of P's antics we have not witness any drunken slob behavior from him in the public.

You don't have to Ghandi just try not acting like a drunken ass in public.
