LotusFlow3r's..."Boom," is creative.

LotusFlow3r’s “Boom,” is creative and sensual.

There is something very deep about this song and I can’t quite put my finger on it. The song begins with these lyrics:

“Imagine another Universe complete with Sun and Moon…
Entire Galaxy and what’s worse, U and I too soon…
Finding ourselves expanding beyond this dirty room…
Butterscotch Mountains…Sunshine…Boom…”

The opening reminds me of the Nebular Theory. “Worlds being Created,” which is basically a gaseous swirling contraction that creates spinning and accretion of particles…That also expands.

Prince goes on to sing:

“Running your fingers up and down the obelisk in the Earth…
Down to 33 RPM’s where the primordial gives birth…”

This line interests me most. I had originally thought of an obelisk as being a circular shape although it is actually a 4-sided tapering pillar that comes to a point as a pyramid.

We have probably tried to comprehend an origin of the world. A “Primordial Bowl,” perhaps is nothing on it’s own in the beginning, however concealing everything within it’s being.

I don’t necessarily believe that Prince is labeling the primordial substance as “female,” I’m not sure of Prince’s interpretation of this word. Even though the primordial is giving birth…I tend to assume it is both male and female. The interesting thing is Prince labeling the speed at, “33 Revolutions Per Minute.” I find that fascinating when I contemplate Universal Harmonics….which I know Prince is very close to within the heart of his music. Prince even references this concept in the song “Space,” when he sings: “Where the songs go, where the tears flow, where the love grows.”

“Boom,” is also orgasmic. In both a sensual way as well as the conception of the world coming naturally.

Feel free to discuss other lyrix in the song and their possible meaning.

The opening lines to this song is up there in the top ten for me of "Great Opening Lines". It's romantic and totally out there at the same time. Like two geeky teenagers at the Planetarium and the boy is trying to get some play from his girl. He'd drop a line like this.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I love this song and was jammin to it and had it up really loud about a hour ago. The vocals and guitar playing is amazing. I agree that its creative but at the same times its very weird-which is not anything new from Prince. I think I hear talking about mushrooms in the song,i may be wrong.... i wish prince would include a lyric booklet when he releases a CD.

The lyrics are all on Lotusflow3r.com. Each world has the respective CDs lyrics.

i agree, this song is incredibly fascinating. The whole album is deep which for me, makes it the album i most wanted from Prince since RC.

I would love to hear more interpretations...from any of the tracks from all 3 cds as i believe they're connected, especially Elixer which also includes the same subject.

I've always seen these lyrics as entirely sexual.

Run ur fingers up and down the Obelisk in the earth
- a girl fingering herself (clitoris = obelisk)

Down 2 33 rmps where the primordial gives birth
- the speed at which she's fingering.
- ahem. where else does a woman give birth?

Or else we lie neck high you and eye In one another's ooze
- obviously the grand orgasm, and I also interpret it as literally a facial (neck high) erupting like a "volcano".

and what else is a celibate mushroom canopy but a penis. I read nothing deep or spiritual in it. I think he wraps it in something cosmic for something entirely animal and basic.

but hey, what do I know?

This song is noise for the sake of making noise. Loud sounds trying to be cool. Just awful.

Its very lovesexy.

Each of us can interpret it in these different ways. Some in a sexual way, some religious...some even both!

...aint that what Lovesexy did?

Prince still got it.

You could be right on...Prince is a man and thinks like a man...I am a woman and seem to think of Prince's lyrics as being very romantic. cool

Right, so if we take clay's opinion into consideration, what is going on at 45rpm's and 78rpm's? cool

Why is it that people always try to look deep in the words of a song? If the lyrics are "swam in an emotional pool...looking for new directions, only to be a circular fool"...

Some may say, that's it's man, lost deep in his emotions, and feeling lost, and in search of a new light....and being a circular fool, is a man who has been around the world in this quest...

Umm no...it's just taking a thought and going with the flow, having no meaning at all...

as one great song writer once said "there is no DEEP-hidden meaning within my songs, I simply take words and put them to my music...if my hand and mind are in sync, then the two become one...and my song is born.." - Stevie Wonder

I can see where U are coming from, although "Primordial," or "Origin," is a deep word. U can't get much deeper than the conjuring up of the Universe. razz

BOOM with its Darling Nikki co-opted lyrical melody is beautifully layered with a floating one minute, thumping the next groove. Intrigue abounds in the chorus as we hear snippets of Prince speaking in reverse (another nod to Darling Nikki). And when you ascend the bridge the track just takes flight and swirls around the heavens before blasting off in a fuzz tone guitar solo.

Who says this guy can't write?

In my opinion this is your best avatar yet.

Back on subject, I agree with your point. I listened to this song yesterday and realised that my appreciation for this album is actually decreasing which is a strange experience for me.

Boom is my favorite part of Lotus so far, feels so organic and sensual, spiraling guitar and lyrics. This is the Prince I adore. Thanks Clay for your interpretation, I never saw it that way until you broke it down. Love it more now. wink

I, too, see it the way clay does, but why on earth should that mean it's not deep and spiritual?

It's just our Prince loving sex and everything having to do with it, but not because it's "tabu" or something that can be so dirty that many people dream of some things related to it, but actually never get them in real life, because of it being so "tabu". The only difference is that he doesn't have to behave like a drooling barbarian when he sees a naked woman's body and knows what he's gonna do with it, because he has style. He doesn't love sex because it's dirty, he loves it because, to him (and to me), it his very deep and spiritual. Which doesn't have to mean that we aren't allowed to 'fuck the shit out of someone' just because it's "spiritual"!

He just sums it up with style, that's it.
