Ya know, I thought that Prince was the father of the ass-less pants until I watched The Decline of Western Civilization Part II - The Metal Years (1988) again recently. This lead singer Randy O for the hair band Odin was wearing butt-less britches during the groups performance in the movie.

Yep, I saw that. (Good documentary, btw.)

nod I need a dose of Mullets Gone Wild once in a while. Now, if only the original punk Decline Of Western Civilization would come out on DVD/Blu-ray... worship

I agree! and with the Musicology tour he taught me what a great performance experience can truly be for the "first" time.

First is a strange hard word because there is probably always some unknow/barely known person - lets say major artist.

- "First" black artist on mtv. Major artist you can see that was going to get a push. You can say he is the first black arist to have 2 music videos on mtv.

- "First" major known entertainer to sell exclusive product on the internet. People like to forget this - Warner Bros made fun of him for doing this - The Simpsons even did a skit having Prince as the center of the internet.

That's not quite true...it's been claimed that the Duran Duran single "Electric Barbarella" was the first commercial music download back in 97.

I remember hearing that too. I remember working in Minneapolis at the Mall of America - Record Town, and that album was out. Someone had mentioned it being online to download back then. Prince certainly had an early presence on the internet, but he wasn't the first to sell music online. Alanis was selling stuff way back then too.

It doesn't seem likely, considering the timeline between the discovery of the AIDS virus and the release of the song. Rap emerged at about the same time as AIDS and was usually very topical, so my money is on it being mentioned in hip hop before Prince wrote SOTT. I have nothing to back this up, though.

And remember Prince never name checked the song, he just referenced it. What was the first song to have the word "AIDS" in it somewhere? No clue, but $10 says it was some dumb ass rapper talking smack about homosexuals or whatever. But who knows.

Weird that the lyrics below from 1984 are similar to the feel of Sign O The Times - even the title has a familiar ring.

Automatic Pilot
Safe Livin' in Dangerous Times - 1984

So many ways people die
Safe livin' in dangerous times
A car on the street
A bomb from the sky
Safe livin'
But living in fear is no damn fun
Watching my friends die one by one.

I'm no fool, I want to survive
Safe livin' in dangerous times
I think it's time we opened our eyes
Safe livin'
To the possibility something's wrong
The nurse looks scared, her gloves are on.

Safe livin' in dangerous times
Safe livin' in dangerous times
Safe livin' in desparate times.

I don't want to preach or sound like a fool
I don't like jokes, I don't want to be cruel.
Morality palys are not what we need
Just find a cure for this damn disease.

Don't be flip, it could happen to you
Doctors, lawyers, housewives too.
Help your lover, help your friend
Now's the time to lend a hand.

Safe livin' in dangerous times
Safe livin' in dangerous times
Safe livin' in desparate times

Maybe. I think Madonna's Justify My Love vid was praised at the time (1990) as being groundbreaking. But that was only one song, if I remember correctly.

I was'nt even aware of the rap artist you referenced.
Although neither song blatantly mentions the word,I remember Prince's reference getting attention in the media at the time.

The lyrics that I posted above weren't from a rap group, but a relatively unknown jazz/showtunes group. Listen to a snip of the song here (quite terrible, in my opinion): http://www.amazon.com/Bac...B000CEVCKG

But, you're right, SOTT did get some attention for it's "headlines-as-lyrics" composition. I'm sure SOTT was the first mainstream single that addressed AIDS - even if it was only a simple, sideways lyric. Saying it was a "big disease" perhaps opened some ears.
