Retail release of ONAL...where is it?

I live in the Seattle area and I haven't been able to get my hands on the retail version of One Night Alone, which I was under the impression was supposed to be released today. I have searched Best Buy, Tower Records, FYE, Wherehouse Music, and a local mom-n-pop store only to come back empty handed. To say that I am a bit frustrated and disappointed would be an understatement. I was wondering if others were having the same difficulty? I inquired about it at both Best Buy and Tower and was meet shrugs and blank stares. Has anyone seen it on the shelves or heard what may have prompted the delay?

I went to a Hastings store today to try to get a copy for my sis. I asked them about it - get this- they had ordered ONE!! copy and it was listed as being on backorder. Christ! Is that really all they think they are gonna sell? There at least has to be one more person in this damn city that wants to get their hands on this thing!

I stopped by my job today, and checked the inventory list. The release date was 12/31/02. Yup...New Year's Eve. So, for all of you Best Buy shoppers...The official release date is the 31st...

Sorry. I guess the Club memberz, ended up getting first dibs after all. So we shouldn't hear much complaining now, right...? confuse

Virgin records in Times Square has it
for $51.99. They had 10 sets when I got there.
I think they're the only store in N.Y.C. to
receive it.

I manage here at a Sam Goody here in NYC and we have it for sale since Friday the 13th. The release date we were given was 12/11/02, anytime we received it we could sell it. It came from Big daddy distribution, we received 15 copies 11 of which were already reserved by customers ahead of time and basically were playing it trying to spread the word. If u are wondering about what Prince is making per box set, the unit cost that stores are charged for it are 33.49, and its list price is 59.99 . So my guess is he is getting about 25 to 30 per box set sold to retail.

I am in the Los Angeles/Orange county area of California.

I went to Best Buy in Lakewood. They pulled it up on the computer. Of the 8 or so stores in the 20 mile radius, one store had ordered 4 copies, all the rest had only ordered 2 copies. None of which had arrived. They did not know when it would show up, but it was supposed to be today.

I went to Tower records. They said they were aware of the boxed set, but they were NOT going to carry it, and had not ordered any.

Warehouse Records: They ordered it, it was supposed to come out today, but didn't show up. The girl said they had ALOT of people asking about it today.

I guess I will try Virgin Megastore tomorrow. Looks like they might be the only ones who might have it.

it does depend on the artist, if you are talking about a newly released box set... if it's an artist that's expected to sell a lot of copies, then a store will generally stock up pretty good on the box set (regardles they will still only put a few on the shelves)...

if an artist's box set is not so likely to sell that many copies, then much fewer will be ordered...

Why are you all so shocked that the stores that have received ONA are stocking very few quantities. I don't know about the used stores where you lived but in every used record store here in Houston, there are ALWAYS tons of copies of Crystal Ball and Emancipation. No store really wants to be stuck with all the overstock. Die hard Prince fans are the only ones really concerned with this release. So expect to go on wild goose chases to find this one.

big daddy is only selling them on a one-way status, which means whatever a store orders, they are stuck with, no returns at all.

I too have had no luck finding it. I'm not gonna stress about it, but I am surprised that no stores got in at least one or two copies. I've now checked in San Antonio and Houston, and I've had no luck. Guess I'll just have to order it online. Still beats paying $100 bucks for it from NPGMC!

Chickengrease has a point, I always seem to find multiple copies of Emancipation and Crystal Ball in cut out bins or in the used section. I can see where that would lead many retailers to be hesitant. I am also assuming that the delay may be inteded to allow more time for members to receive their copies before the set appears in stores. Thanks for the feedback.

Well when I check out the box-set sections they only have one of each box set of any artist, maybe, maybe two. At least put out for display -purchase. Im in sunny southern California.

I agree witcha, when it comes to brand spankin new box set releases. Prince seems to be a special case, though. Most box sets are only anthologies or greatest hits packages. Prince has released brand new material with 3 discs. Since Emancipation stores here ordered way too many of his sets and are still stuck with overstock that they can't move used after continuous price reductions. A Wherehouse Music around the corner from me has damn near 30 Crystal Balls that still aren't selling at only $20...and that's 4 cds. So I expect them to be very hesitant of ordering this new one at all unless someone comes in and requests it.

I think they are treating this as a 'regular" type of release. 'Cept for the price hehe.
