"Real drums"

Ok, we all know that Prince can play drums. But...can somebody list all songs, where he plays REAL drums? You know, I read one article in which was stated that Prince use only programmed drums or guest drummers like John, Sheila or Mike.. Any song on which he really PLAYS drums?

Everything on "For You" and "Prince" is Prince drumming on live drums I believe... most of Dirty Mind and Controversy is also Prince on live drums I believe (Morris Day may have played on some tracks)... I think Private Joy is the first use by Prince of a drum machine... please someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Thanks for info wink And what about Musicology? Is it Pro"fuc*in"Tools or real drums?

Does anybody remember that info about TRC as "the first Prince album with live drumming"? It seems like more people have problems to tell if it's live or not..

I don't know about Musicology... I haven't listened to that in a long time.

I don't see how TRC could be the first Prince album with live drumming... that seems like a strange bit of info...

Yeah, it's a little bit strange because Another Lonely Christmas is live drumming too, isn't..

I believe the live drums (by Prince) on recent albums (e.g. musicology, call my name etc) is prince drumming, but i think he runs it through a 'computer sequencer' and loops up the bits he likes - so they are live prince drums but digitized and fooled around with, I was pleasantly surprised so read the drums on Satisfied are by prince, they sound excellent.

Thank you very much! That was the info I was looking for! It really sounds like it's looped..

So almost every song that doesn't have Linn is played by Prince, am I right? (Except the songs where's * indicated, of course.. smile)

He plays most of the instruments period during the recording process (most of the time). He then works with others for touring purposes. If no other musicians were credited on a given track then he most likely did all the playing for it and will have his touring band learn it for the shows.

Sexual Suicide

the two top songs I like with Prince playing drums live...

I suspect that Another Lonely Christmas is him playing the drums as well.

I always thought Sheila E. played the drums on Sexual Suicide. I think it says that in the liner notes on Crystal Ball.

I thought it said HE showed HER how to play the beat, and then she did when they recorded it?

I guess someone could, you know, go look at the liner notes, but.... lol

The drums on the title track "Dirty Mind" are programmed so I was told by Morris and Andre. P played all of the drums on his debut album except for "I'm Yours". THAT'S Bobby Z. From what I was told, P at that stage STILL was not sure if he was going with Bobby or P's cousin, Charles Smith. So he used that track as another form of audition for Bobby and Charles. Andre said that he was staying up in California with P along with Owen and his wife. He also said that P flew Bobby and Charles both up there together to do another "audition". But this time, it was to be in the studio. He felt that both of them had the funk sound down but since "I'm Yours" is a rock track, he wanted to see how they would do on the track. Plus the pressure of being in the studio and playing on what they knew was to be P's debut album, he wanted to see how they would do. Dre told me that P dug Bobby's playing on that track the best so he kept it on the album.

Other than that, P is playing the drums on all of his second album. All but the title track "Dirty Mind" which was programmed and "Party UP" which was played by Morris. P played drums on the track "Controversy", "Let's Work", "Do Me, Baby". Bobby played drums on "Ronnie Talk". P played on Get It Up, Oh Baby and Girl. Morris is on The Stick and Cool. Dez is on drums on After Hi School. P played drums on "Free", "International Lover" and parts of "Lady Cab Driver" which are part live and part programmed drums. "Irrissitble Bitch" P also played drums on. Darling Nikki is P on the drums as well as God (Love Theme) and Another Lonely Christmas. Tamborine is P. Pop Life is Sheila. Morris is on Wild and Loose and The Walk. Dez is on drums on Vanity 6's 3x2=6

Nah, I'm refering to Dirty Mind, the title track. That's why I mentioned "the title track and "Party Up". Party Up being on the Dirty Mind album.

I went back and included "Dirty Mind" in my o.g. post. I just assumed everyone would know what I was refering to because I had just mentioned that in my previous post. But no worries...everything will be right as rain.
