Prince + Sly via Teena Marie

I read the great article about Teena Marie which is another current thread and on the linked web site there were a few stories about Sly Stone and that Prince and Sly were at a party and didn't talk to each other. Doesn't really surprise me as Prince is probably pissed off about Sly's long term substance abuse, wasting of his talent and non-existent voice.

But, what did surprise me was this:

"Prince seemed to disparage Sly on 2001's the Rainbow Children and then recognized him as a hero on 2004's Musicology."

I know where P praised Sly but where does he disparage Sly on TRC?

I'd guess it would be this from 'Everlasting Now':

Now turn the page, at an early age
This brotha on stage, he was all the rage
He taught an integrated world 2 sing
The color U are don't mean a thing
Everybody's a star all the everyday people sang

He changed the funk, put it in a bag
Then he changed the colors of the flag
But U can't teach a dog new tricks if the tail don't wag
Don't no matter how much money U made
All the cars U got and all the women U laid
If U mess with the flag, 2 them U're still a spade

But it's hardly disparaging.

Thanks Nouveau,
Forgot about that reference. But the 'put it in a bag' always made me think of James Brown and 'Papa's Got a Brand New Bag'. But I can see that the statement could easily be referring to Sly Stone. he could easily be referring to himself! I have thought about tthat many times when listening to this song. A lot of the references can be directly aimed at Prince and the 'bag' and 'everyday people' mentions are his way of saying that he was influenced by James and Sly respectively.

As you pointed out, it is hardly disparaging. In fact it is making a comment against racism in US society as far as I'm concerned.

i always thought he was talking about himself in that part. "mess with the flag" was standing up to corporate entities, "to them your still a spade" referring to how quickly he (or any other black artist) can be blackballed, put under the radar for speaking out. The sly angle is a new one on me, OPK, only prince knows lol

Yeah, it's mixed up, it could also just as easily refer to Larry Graham. Maybe it refers to all of these, as if he's putting himself in a continuum of funk.

dreamshaman32 - the flag reference is most likely about the cover 'There's a Riot Goin' On'.

Why am I not surprised that Prince fans are clueless about the cover to Sly's masterpiece "There's a Riot Goin' On"?
